聪慧的少年

外面十分热闹。时值圣诞,夜色中的运河大桥上彩灯闪烁。脸蛋红扑扑的男男女女骑着自行车,咔哒咔哒地行驶在卵石路上,围巾在寒风中飘拂着,圣诞树在车后座上颤颤悠悠。每天下午都有业余乐队演奏圣诞颂歌,纤弱的余音停在冬季的空中,弥久不散。
客房送餐服务员送来的餐盘被我弄得满目狼藉:太多的香烟,从免税店买来的微温的伏特加。在那段忐忑不安、闭门不出的日子里,我就像囚犯熟悉囚牢一样,熟悉客房的每一寸地方。那是我第一次去阿姆斯特丹;我只了解客房,对市容市貌几乎一无所知。客房有种久经风吹日晒的阴郁之美,颇具北欧风情,宛如荷兰的微缩模型:粉刷过的白墙,新教徒的整洁,与商船从东方带来的奢华之风融合在一起。我毫无来由地花了好多时间,仔细观看挂在橱柜上方的两幅镀金装裱小画:一幅画的是农夫们在结冰的湖面上溜冰,旁边是一座教堂;另一幅画的是一艘帆船在冬季躁动不宁的大海上颠簸前行。这两幅画只是装饰性的复制品,并无特别之处,可我还是仔细端详,仿佛画中蕴含重要信息,可以借此解开佛兰芒那些古老画家隐秘的内心。外面,雨夹雪拍打着窗玻璃,洒落在运河上。尽管屋里有华丽的锦缎和柔软的地毯,冬天的光线却依然透出一九四三年的寒意,让我不由想起那时的贫困和艰苦。那时人们喝不加糖的淡茶,上床睡觉时饥肠辘辘。
每天我趁天还没亮,赶在加班的旅馆职员上班、大堂人满为患之前,下楼去拿报纸。旅馆职员轻声细语,踏地无声,走来走去,冷淡的目光从我身上掠过,仿佛并未看到我,并未看到这个白天从不下楼的二十七岁美国男子。我尽量安慰自己,那位夜间值班经理(穿黑西装,留小平头,戴角质架眼镜)应该不是好事之徒。
《先驱论坛报》没有报道我的困境,不过整件事是登上了荷兰的各大报刊,只字不识的我看了大段外文只能干着急。“悬而未决的谋杀案”。“身份不详”。我上楼回到床上(衣服一件没脱,因为屋里太冷),把报纸在床罩上铺开。我看到了警车和犯罪现场录像的照片,但我连标题都看不懂,不过报上好像并没提到我的名字。看不出他们是否已经掌握了我的外貌特征,或者是否保留了部分信息,没有向公众披露。
客房。暖气。“一个有犯罪记录的美国人”。橄榄绿色的运河水。
因为怕冷,再加上抱病在身,我经常无事可做(我忘了带本书过来,还有保暖的衣服),只好把白天的大半时间消磨在床上。刚到下午三点左右,天好像就黑了。我经常在摊开的报纸窸窸窣窣的响声中,迷迷糊糊地昏睡过去,清醒时的那股莫名的焦虑,在梦里也摆脱不掉:过堂审讯;行李箱在飞机跑道上爆开,我的衣服散落一地;我在没有尽头的机场走廊上匆匆跑过,去赶飞机,心里却明白,自己无论如何也赶不上了。
因为发烧,我做了好些栩栩如生的怪梦,身体辗转反侧,出了不少汗。我几乎分不清白天和黑夜,不过在烧得最凶的最后一天晚上,我梦到了母亲:那是一个短促而神秘的梦,感觉更像是一次显灵。我在霍比的店里——或者更确切地说,是在一片闹鬼的梦中空间里,那儿布置得挺像那家店——她突然来到我的身后,我从镜子里看到了她的身影。我一看到她,就被幸福感攫住了,身体就像麻痹了一般。是她,每个微小的细节都对,那些雀斑的位置也丝毫不差;她冲我微笑,样子美极了,她一点儿也没有变老,乌黑的头发,向上翘的滑稽嘴角;不像是梦,她的存在感充满整个房间,那样独特,那样别具一格。我很想转过身去,但知道不能那么做,我要是直接向她望去,就会违反她那个世界和我这个世界的法则。她只能用这样的方式过来看我,我们的目光在镜中交会了很久很久,时光仿佛静止了一般。不过就在她想要开口说些什么时——话里似乎融合了快乐、爱意和气恼——一团雾气涌入我俩中间,我醒了过来。

她倘若还活着,一切都会好得多。她去世时我还是个孩子。虽然从那以后,发生在我身上的一切都是我一个人的错,不过自从失去了她,我就再也看不到能指引我前往某个更加幸福的地方的路标,让我过上不那么孤单或者更适合我的生活。
她的死亡就像一道分水岭,划分出之前和之后的生活。承认这一点未免令我沮丧,不过这么多年来,我再也没有遇到能像她那样让我感受到被爱的人。有了她的陪伴,一切都焕发出活力;她仿佛在身边洒下了迷人的剧院灯光,透过她的眼睛去看,一切都会变得比往常更鲜艳夺目。我记得,就在她去世的几个星期之前,我跟她一起在格林尼治村的一家意大利餐馆吃了一顿夜宵。她突然抓住我的衣袖,侍者们排着队,从厨房捧出一个非常可爱的生日蛋糕,蛋糕上点着蜡烛,模糊的光圈在黑魆魆的天花板上摇曳着。然后他们把蛋糕放在那一家人中间,一位老太太带着满脸幸福的笑容,向身边的人致意,侍者们背着手离开了。只是一顿普普通通的生日晚餐,在闹市区的任何一家廉价餐馆都会看到,我能肯定,要不是没过多久母亲就去世了,我是不会记得这次晚餐的。不过她去世以后,我把这次晚餐回想了好多遍,也许我这辈子都会把它记在心里:那个烛光围成的圆圈,那个洋溢着平凡幸福的场景。自从母亲去世以后,我就再也没有体会过那样的幸福。
她人长得也美。这并不重要,不过她的确是个美人。她刚从堪萨斯州来纽约时做过兼职模特,不过她在摄影机前总是不够自然,因此表现欠佳。她的特质没能在胶卷上展现出来。
她是个别具一格的人,像她那样的人世间少有。我不记得自己见过跟她真正相似的人。她有一头黑发,白皙皮肤夏天会生雀斑,亮闪闪的眼睛是中国蓝色的。颧骨部位的斜面上,颇为古怪地融合了部落民的特质和凯尔特的暮色。有时候别人猜她是冰岛人。其实她有一半爱尔兰血统,一半切罗基血统。她的老家在堪萨斯州的一个城镇,靠近俄克拉荷马州边界。她喜欢管自己叫“俄州人”,把我逗得哈哈笑。她就像赛马一样光彩照人,刚强勇毅。不幸的是,她那种混血的特质在照片上体现得有点生硬,显得冷酷无情——她的雀斑被化妆品遮住了,她的头发梳成垂在脑后的马尾辫,使她看上去就像《源氏物语》里的贵族。照片丝毫传达不出她的热情,她那欢快、出人意表的性格,这正是我最喜欢她的地方。从她在照片里略显僵硬的样子不难看出,她有多么不信任摄影机;她整个人透出一种警觉、凶猛的气质,就像正在为迎接袭击做好准备。不过生活中的她并不是这样。她的行动敏捷得惊人,她的动作急促而轻盈,她总是坐在椅子边上,就像某种体态细长而优雅的湿地鸟类,随时都会惊起,飞走。我喜欢她搽的那种檀香味香水,那股香味既质朴又出人意表。我喜欢她俯身吻我额头时,浆洗过的衬衫发出的窸窣声。听到她的笑声,你会情不自禁地想要放下手头的事,跟她一起走上街头。她每次出门,男人们都用眼角余光打量着她,有时候他们看她的那种样子让我感到有些不快。
她的死是我的错。别人总是劝我,说那不是我的错,但那就是我的错。只是一个孩子,谁能想到呢,可怕的意外,运气不好,谁都有可能碰上这样的事。这些话都对,只是我一个字也不信。
那件事发生在纽约,十四年前的四月十日。就连我的手都对这个日子心怀抵触。我得费好大力气,才能让钢笔在纸上保持移动,把它写下来。这原本是一个再平常不过的日子,然而如今它竖在日历上,就像一枚生锈的钉子。
如果那一天一切都能按照原计划进行,那它会在不知不觉间烟消云散,像我八年级那年其余的日子一样荡然无存,了无痕迹。那样的话,我对那天还会剩下多少记忆?很少,或者一点不剩。不过现实是那天早晨比现在还要清晰,就连空气中的湿意都令人难忘。夜里下过雨,是一场可怕的暴风雨,商店进了水,两个地铁站关闭。我们俩站在我们的公寓楼外面泡了水的地毡上,她最喜欢、也对她满怀倾慕的门卫戈尔迪,沿着第五十七街倒退着走过来。他举起一只胳膊,吹着哨子叫出租车。一辆辆车飞速驶过,溅起股股脏水;胀满雨水的乌云在摩天大楼上方翻滚着,朝着一片片晴朗的蓝天飘去;在下面的大街上,汽车排放的尾气下面,泉水般潮湿绵软的风扑在人身上。
“啊,他的车有客人了,夫人。”戈尔迪用盖过街头喧嚣的嗓门喊道,给一辆出租车让路。出租车转过拐角,溅起水花,灭掉灯。他是几个门卫中身材最矮小的一个。他是个面容憔悴、身体瘦弱、生气勃勃的小个子,就像肤色偏白的前次轻量级拳击手普埃尔托?里坎。不过因为饮酒过度,他的面皮有些松弛(有时他值夜班时身上散发着珍宝威士忌的气味),他依然强健结实,动作敏捷。他总爱打趣,总是去街角抽烟休息。天冷的时候,他总是倒换着脚站着,朝戴着白手套的手上呵气。他用西班牙语讲笑话,把其他门卫逗得哈哈大笑。
“你们今天早晨急着出门?”他问我母亲。他的名牌上写着“伯特?D”,但每个人都管他叫戈尔迪,因为他有一颗金牙,还因为他的姓氏“德奥罗”在西班牙语里是“金子”的意思。
“不急,有的是时间,没关系。”不过妈妈看上去颇为疲惫,头巾被风吹开了,她把它重新系好时双手有些发抖。
戈尔迪准是注意到了这一点,因为他略为不满地觑了我一眼。我以一副躲避的姿态,倚在大楼前面的水泥花盆上,眼睛就是不肯看母亲。
“你们不坐地铁吗?”他问我。
“哦,我们要去办点儿事。”母亲见我不知道该说什么好,有些拿不准地说。通常我不怎么留意她的穿着,不过她那天早晨的那身穿着(白色风衣、粉色薄纱围巾、黑白双色平底便鞋)深深铭刻在我的记忆里,我没法把她记成别的样子。
那时我十三岁。我不愿回想最后那天早晨我们之间有多么别扭,就连门卫都注意到了。平时我们总是有说有笑,不过那天早晨我们彼此无话可说,因为我受到了停学的处分。前一天,校方把电话打到她的办公室。她回到家时沉默不语,怒气冲冲。糟糕的是,我压根儿就不知道自己为什么受到停学的处分,不过我有百分之七十五的把握能肯定是因为比曼先生。他从办公室往教师休息室走时,从二楼楼梯平台的窗户向外眺望,可能刚好看到我在校园里抽烟。要不然就是看到我站在汤姆?凯布尔身边,而汤姆正在抽烟,这样同样违反校规。我母亲反感吸烟。她的父母——我很爱听她讲他们的事,可惜他们去世太早,我跟他们无缘相见——是和蔼可亲的驯马师,在西部四处游历,靠驯养摩根马谋生。他们性情活泼,爱喝鸡尾酒,玩卡纳斯塔扑克牌游戏,每年都去参加肯塔基州的马术比赛,还总是把香烟装在银质烟盒里,家里到处都是这样的烟盒。后来有一天,外婆从马厩回到屋里时弯下腰咯起血来。打那以后,在母亲的少年时代里,前门门廊上,卧室始终放下来的百叶窗下,一直摆着氧气罐。
不过——正如我所担心的,这份担心并非毫无缘由——汤姆的香烟问题,只是冰山一角。在此之前的一段时间里,我在校内的处境一直不妙。这是从几个月前父亲撇下母亲离家出走时开始的,或者说,从那时起变得愈发严重。我们一直不太喜欢他,他不在我们身边时,母亲和我要开心得多,不过他突然抛弃我们(没有留下钱、子女抚养费或今后的住址),让我们深感震惊和忧虑,上西区那所学校的老师为我深感遗憾,他们想要给予体谅和支持的心情是那样迫切,结果他们给了我——一个拿奖学金的学生——各种照顾和宽限,还有一而再再而三的弥补机会。这样的纵容持续了数月之久,最终我越陷越深,无法自拔。
于是校方要我们——我和母亲——前去面谈。会面时间定在十一点半,不过因为母亲不得不请一上午假,我们干脆早早出发,去上西区吃早餐(依我看,还会有一场严肃的谈话),她还要给一个同事买生日礼物。头天晚上,她不眠不休地忙到夜里两点半,电脑发出的光照着她紧绷的面容。她写了些电子邮件,尽量把无法在次日上午做的工作提前安排好。
“我不知道你怎么样,”戈尔迪用颇为激烈的语气跟母亲说,“我是受够春天和潮湿啦。没完没了地下雨——”他打了个哆嗦,把衣领拉紧,又看了看天空。
“我想,下午就该放晴了。”
“嗯,我知道,不过我已经在盼望夏天了。”他摩擦着双手。“那时候,人们纷纷弃城而去,他们讨厌夏天,抱怨天气太热,可我呢——我就像热带的鸟儿,越热越觉得舒坦。尽管来吧!”他拍了拍手,回到街上。“告诉你我最喜欢什么吧,那就是一进七月,这里就安静下来啦。人去楼空,静悄悄的,人都走了,明白吗?”他打了个响指,出租车急速驶过。“那时候就是我的假期。”
“那你在外面不热吗?”我那性情冷淡的老爸很烦她这一点——妈妈爱跟侍者、门卫、干洗店里有哮喘的老头搭腔。“我是说,冬天起码还可以加衣裳——”
“你是说冬天守门吗?我跟你说吧,那时候可冷了。穿多少衣裳,戴多少顶帽子都不管用。一月二月里,站在外头,就在这儿守着,风从河上吹过来。嗖嗖的。”
我不安地咬着大拇指的指甲,盯着一辆辆从戈尔迪高举的手臂旁边急速驶过的出租车。我知道,十一点半的面谈之前是痛苦而漫长的等待。到了学校之后,我必须老老实实地站着,不能让不慎脱口而出的问话,坐实自己的罪过。我不知道他们让我们走进办公室之后,会跟我和母亲说些什么。“面谈”这个词,不免让人想起齐聚一堂的校方领导、各种谴责和低头认罪,最后说不定还会遭到开除。要是我失去了领取奖学金的资格,那可就惨了。爸爸离开之后,我们就一贫如洗,连房租都快交不上了。我最担心不过的,就是比曼先生不知用什么办法,发现了我去汉普顿那边找汤姆?凯布尔玩的时候,经常跟汤姆去闯空无一人的度假屋。虽说是“闯”,但我们并没撬锁,也没搞任何破坏。汤姆的妈妈是房产经纪人,我们是拿她挂在办公室挂架上的备用钥匙开门进去的。我们只翻了翻壁橱和梳妆台抽屉,不过也拿走了一些东西:冰箱里的啤酒、一些Xbox游戏碟、一盘DVD(李连杰演的《狼犬丹尼》),还有总共九十二元左右的现金:皱巴巴的五元和十元的票子放在厨房的罐子里,大把零钱是从洗衣房里的衣服口袋掏出来的。
我每次想起这件事都觉得恶心。我有好几个月没跟汤姆一起出去了,不过尽管我努力说服自己,比曼先生不可能知道我们闯空门的事——他怎么可能知道呢?——但我的想象力却在惶恐中肆意狂奔。我打定主意绝不告发汤姆(虽说我无法确定他没有告发我),不过这样一来,我的处境未免有些不太妙。我当初怎么就那么蠢呢?非法闯入是犯罪行为,是要坐牢的。头天夜里,我躺在床上,辗转反侧几个小时。我望着雨水伴着时强时弱的阵风拍打着窗户,心里琢磨着万一要对质,自己应该说些什么。不过我连他们掌握了哪些情况都不清楚,又该如何辩白呢?
戈尔迪长叹一声,垂下手,回到母亲身边。
“真叫人难以置信,”他对我妈妈说,一边用疲惫的眼神留意着街道,“水都漫到苏荷区了。你听说了吧?卡洛斯说,联合国那边的一些街道彻底堵住了。”
我愁眉苦脸地望着成群结队的工人纷纷走下横穿城区的公交,他们看上去就像一窝闷闷不乐的黄蜂。我们往西走一两个街区,说不定能更容易打到车。不过我和母亲都知道,我们要是就这么走了,戈尔迪准会不高兴。不过就在这时——太过突然,我们吓了一跳——一辆亮着灯的出租车从另一侧车道滑行过来,带起一片下水道味儿的污水。
“当心!”戈尔迪说,往边上一跳,出租车猛地刹住车。这时他看到母亲没拿雨伞。“等一下。”他说着冲进大堂,跑到他搁在壁炉旁边的铜罐那里,他把别人遗失的伞都收集到这个铜罐里,下雨天再分给众人。
“不用了,”母亲喊道,把手伸进包里,摸索着那把白底花纹小折叠伞,“别麻烦了,戈尔迪,我已经准备好了——”
戈尔迪奔回路边,在她身后关上出租车门。然后他俯下身体,敲了敲车窗。
“祝你们过得开心。”他说。
