卢梭一介平民，既不贵列公卿，又不富甲天下，甚至连一个起码的学历也没有，到他1778年逝世的时候，他的身份还是一个“逃犯”，颠沛流离，困厄一生，而他自述其一生行事的《忏悔录》之所以能流传至今二百余年，依然为人诵读，究其原因，实无他秘，乃得力于书中一字一句皆出自真诚。他在一篇原拟用来作为其自传序言的短文中说：他要对他一生的“言行做一番忏悔”，他要不遗余力地表明他的心是真诚的。他说： “如果在我的著作中看不出我的真诚，在书中没有什么话可以证明它，那就表明我书中的话不是出自真心。”①言为心声，读其书，如见其人。卢氏之书之能扣人心弦，虽文字畅晓为其一因，但更多的是由于他的语言真实；只有真实的语言才能引起读者内心的共鸣。人们常说卢梭是一个有才情的作家，若问他的才情从何而来，是天生的吗?不是。他说他的全部才华都来自他对他“要写作的文章的热情”；他“永远是为了心中有思想要抒发才写作”。①他说他的《忏悔录》是一部“有益世人的著作”。②为有益世人而作的书，是好书。好书如良师，如益友。逻译此书，奉献于读者，是一件很有意义的工作，故余虽年逾八旬，亦愿为完成这一工作而努力。
