丹尼尔·凯曼（Daniel Kehlmann），

德国当代作家，评论家。1975年出生于慕尼黑。后考入维也纳大学，攻读哲学与德国文学。

1997年出版一本小说《贝尔宏姆的想象》。2003年，小说《我与康明斯基》为他赢得世界声誉。2005年出版《丈量世界》，被译为40多种语言，销量突破200万册，被誉为二战后德语文学伟大的成就之一，这年作者才30岁。2008年获托马斯?曼奖。

旅行
一八二八年九月，全德国最伟大的数学家高斯多年来第一次离开故乡，前往柏林出席德国自然科学研究者会议。他当然不愿意动身。在获邀后的几个月里，一直都在拒绝，却敌不过亚历山大·冯·洪堡的顽固和坚持，最终心软答应下来。即便这样，他也仍希望动身的那一天永远都不要到来。
现在，高斯教授躲在床上。明娜正催他起床，马车已经备好，何况路途遥远。他紧紧抓住枕头，闭上双眼，试图让妻子就此消失。再次睁开眼睛时，明娜仍然站在床前，他便开始骂她难缠、专制，是自己余生的不幸。当然，骂也没用，到头来，他只好掀起被单下床。
他带着怒气草草洗漱完走下楼，儿子欧根正在客厅等着，行李已经装好。一见到儿子，高斯的怒火喷发了，他抓起窗台上的一只罐子，用力摔了个粉碎，然后跺着脚，继续砸东西。欧根和明娜一左一右用手摁着他的肩膀，向他保证人们会好好照顾他，他不久就能回到家里，这一切就像一场很快结束的噩梦，但高斯仍不能平静下来。直到他年事已高的母亲被外面的闹声惊扰，从房间里走出来，捏着他的脸问她那个勇敢的儿子哪儿去了，他才多少收敛了一些，非常不情愿地辞别明娜，心不在焉地摸了摸女儿和小儿子的脑袋，由人搀扶着上了马车。
旅途十分艰苦。高斯骂欧根是个失败者，顺手拿起木头拐杖，用力去捅儿子的脚。然后，他皱紧眉头盯着窗外看了好一阵子，喃喃问道，女儿到底什么时候才能出嫁，为什么没有人愿意娶她，问题究竟出在哪儿？
欧根向后拢好长发，两手捏捏头上的红帽子，似乎不想回答。
说话，高斯冲他嚷道。
说实话，欧根应道，姐姐不是美人儿。
高斯点了点头，这个回答不假。便打住话题，问欧根要本书看。
欧根把自己刚翻开的书递给他：弗里德里希·扬的《德意志体操艺术》。这是欧根最喜欢的书之一。
高斯看了不过几秒钟就抬起头来，转而抱怨车轮上的新式皮弹簧减震装置，这东西让人们坐车时比以前更难受了。接着他说，不久的将来会有一种机器，以子弹的速度搭载人们往返于城市之间，到了那个时候，从哥廷根到柏林，只需要半个小时。
欧根摇摇头，一脸不相信。
这既古怪又不公平，高斯说，生活充满了可鄙的专制，一个真实的例子就是，不管你愿不愿意，你都会在某个特定的时代出生，然后被束缚其中。它使你在面对过去时，有一种天然的优势，而在面对未来时，又与小丑无异。

即便拥有他这样的头脑，高斯接着说，身在人类文明早期或者奥里诺科河畔，也无能为力；而两百年后的任何一个蠢蛋，都会以他为消遣，杜撰各种关于他的谬见。他停下来想了一会儿，突然又愤恨地骂欧根是个失败者，然后才重新把注意力集中到那本书上。欧根凝视着窗外，以此来掩藏他那张因为受了羞辱和伤害而扭曲的脸。
《德意志体操艺术》是一本介绍体操器材的书。作者详细地讲解了由他亲自设计的、可以让人们在上面翻转跳跃的运动设备，还给它们取了名字：鞍马、平衡木、跳马。
这家伙简直疯了！高斯说着，一把打开车窗，将书扔了出去。
欧根喊着，那可是他的书。
就是这样才要把它扔掉，高斯说完就闭上眼睛睡着了，直到傍晚在边境驿站换马时才醒来。
在套换马匹的空当，他们坐在驿站的餐厅里喝土豆汤。客人很少，店里除了他们，只有一个蓄长须、两颊深陷的瘦男人。那人坐在邻桌，偷偷地打量着他们。高斯因梦见各种体操器材而恼怒不已，愤懑地说身体简直是一切耻辱的根源，上帝真会恶作剧，像他这种了不起的灵魂，竟被困在一个孱弱的躯体里；而欧根那样的庸人，却几乎从不生病。
欧根回应说他小时候得过天花，差点儿送了命，如今还能看到疤痕。
哦，是的，高斯说他都忘了那件事。他指指窗外的驿马，说这真是个笑话，同样的路程，富人花费的时间是穷人的两倍——租驿站马匹的人，每站都可以更换新马；骑自己马的人，得等着它恢复精力才能继续上路。
那又怎么样？欧根说。
啧啧，对于一个不习惯思考的人，这似乎是理所当然，高斯说，就好比年轻男人会随身带手杖，老年人反而不带。
大学生持节杖，欧根说，一向如此，这习惯还会延续下去。
或许吧，高斯笑了笑。
他们不再说话，只是默默转动着汤匙，直到边境宪兵进了餐厅，命令他们出示通行证。欧根递给他自己的通行证，那是一张官方证书，上面写着：“此人是学生，无须怀疑，获准随他父亲一道踏上普鲁士的土地。”宪兵怀疑地看着欧根，又仔细检查了一遍通行证，终于对他点了点头。接下来是高斯——而他，身上什么凭证都没有。
没有任何证明吗，宪兵吃惊地问道，没有邀请函，没有官印，什么都没有？
