Author Description

刘易斯·华莱士（1827-1905），美国南北战争时期联邦军将领，少将。后为律师和外交官。华莱士虽然也写过诗和剧本，但他的文学声誉主要建立在三本历史小说上。1873年出版的《公正的上帝》描写西班牙征服墨西哥的故事。1893年出版的《印度王子》描写流浪的犹太人和拜占庭帝国。他*有名的历史小说是《宾虚》，这本书极受欢迎，1927年曾拍成电影，1959年又重拍了一次。获得奥斯卡佳影片等多项大奖。

导读：历经磨难终成大器
刘易斯?华莱士（1827－1905）一生出入政坛和战场，无论在哪一个领域，他的经历都兼有成功和失意，颇多唏嘘。华莱士一生最为后人所称道的作品就是1880年出版的小说《宾虚》，这部著作的出版获得了巨大的成功，试想一下能有多少作家能在有生之年看到自己的作品销量超两百万册？就算在出版业已经非常发达的今天，这个数字也绝对算得上是难得的成就。
华莱士一生做过律师、将军、参议员、州长等，作品当然也并非仅《宾虚》一部，但他所经历的人生挑战和际遇仿佛就是为了《宾虚》所做的铺垫，最终促成了这部传世之作的诞生。
《宾虚》讲述的故事发生在犹太耶路撒冷地区周边，时间跨度三十多年，正是耶稣基督诞生前后这个时间段。主人公犹大?宾虚是作者华莱士先生虚构的一位犹太王子，故事的主线便是围绕宾虚一生传奇的经历展开，同时穿插了耶稣基督降临的故事。
罗马政府指派新任耶路撒冷指挥官梅撒拉赴任履新，梅撒拉为了巩固自己对当地犹太人的殖民统治，会见儿时好友犹太王子宾虚并劝说其出卖自己的民族和同胞，以助其仕途。在其提议被宾虚拒绝后，梅撒拉便伺机报复。尔后，他借口在罗马总督巡视时发生的意外，指控宾虚蓄意谋杀罗马总督，将宾虚流放，同时将宾虚的母亲和妹妹关进地牢。
宾虚被流放途中经过沙漠，在他干渴得奄奄一息时，有一个人（耶稣）给他喂水将他救醒。宾虚被救起后，从那人身上得到了在苦难中生存的信心和力量，继续踏上了艰辛的流放之路。
后来，宾虚被安排到一条罗马战船上，以奴隶浆手的身份勉强生存下来。在一次海战中，宾虚救起了舰队指挥官，而此人颇为喜爱宾虚的善良和坚定，不仅还给他自由，还将他收为义子，带回罗马。宾虚得此机遇，一边在罗马发展，一边谋划返回家乡寻找亲人和仇人。途中他与一位东方博士邂逅，这位博士多年前曾因圣灵指引，献礼于一位婴孩，若婴孩长大成人，此时的年纪应与宾虚相同。
宾虚返回耶路撒冷，一路上结交了不少好友，这些好友帮他找到了仇人梅撒拉，并最终与他一起驱战车角逐于大竞技场，梅撒拉在关键一圈失手，几乎殒命。宾虚一直寻找的母亲和妹妹，此时已经身患麻风病，被隔离于麻风山谷。宾虚眼见亲人患病却无能为力，心中满是苦楚。途中，他看到一个人在山上向人们宣讲：“虚心的人有福了，因为天国是他们的……”，这人似曾相识。正是这个人治愈了宾虚的母亲和妹妹的病痛，可就在宾虚决定带母亲和妹妹回家时，途中目睹了罗马巡抚彼拉多正下令将此人钉死到十字架上。他被鞭打、戴荆冠、身负十字架行路……
小说的副标题是“关于基督的故事”，华莱士的高明之处就在于整部作品对耶稣的正面描述几乎没有，主耶稣的几次出场给读者的感觉都是背影或者侧影的闪现，甚至是通过第三者的口述。这种手法反而加强了读者对基督的主观认知，通过避免晦涩或华丽的神迹描绘，让主的形象让人更加容易接受。
如果读者稍加留意的话，作品以马槽圣婴诞生开始，以宾虚放弃武力，虔诚信主结束，虽然主角一直是犹太人宾虚，但是我们能感受到作者真正要倾诉给人们的，是书中的那个身影——基督。华莱士不着笔墨反胜浓墨重彩，从不大声宣扬却使读者心领意会，这种写作手法也是颇值得写作爱好者学习的。
小说中涉及一些圣经人物、希腊神话，多数只为丰满作品存在，读者只需要稍作了解即可通读，这些细节并不影响读者对作品的理解和欣赏。
国内的读者对《宾虚》的了解可能不是很多，许多人是通过奥斯卡经典同名影片认识这部作品的。的确，1959年的电影翻拍是影史上难得一见的佳作，读者有兴趣的话，译者推荐您可以把电影和小说进行比较欣赏。实际上作为小说的《宾虚》受欢迎程度绝不逊于电影，实际上1880年出版的这部作品，在美国一直占据了畅销作品榜榜首数十年，直到《飘》的出现，这个神话才被打破；而颇具意味的是，到1959年电影翻拍大获成功后，小说《宾虚》的受欢迎度又反过来超越了《飘》。译者认为《宾虚》作为基督教入门文学作品，对读者加深了解西方基督教文化还是颇有助益的，同时其故事性强的特点，又不局限于宗教作品，国内读者没有宗教情结的，也大可把它当作流行小说来阅读。
