小水的白鞋，是给小男人穿的。爹娘死得早，小水就跟伯伯韩文举过活。韩文举能说会道，但性情敏感而胆怯，四十岁前浮浮浪浪错过了几次娶老婆的良机，四十岁后有机会娶老婆了，却没了收拾老婆的力气和心思，就光棍起了一辈子。他爱小水，爱酒，爱船，也爱在船上和来回搭渡的妇女取乐，说谑话。他是靠嘴受活的，这嘴里的话就常常说得出格，失了老年人的规矩，于别人，妇女早破口大骂了，但韩文举失规矩妇人还乐。小水有这样一个伯伯，什么都觉得好，就是嫌他浪荡惯了，心粗，一在船上喝酒说话便几天几夜不回家。因此小水从小成熟，像一匹马，没有调就驾辕拉车了。七岁上搭凳子在案上擀面，擀得薄纸一张，伯伯端着一窝丝一碗，高挑着在渡口上吸，没有人不企羡的。别人一夸小水，韩文举就张狂，邀了人家来喝酒，他又见酒便醉，反害得小水三更半夜打灯笼到酒场接扶他。金狗当兵那年，夜里穿着新军装到韩家话别，韩文举又拿了酒来喝，金狗没喝醉，他却先躺倒了。金狗也有些头重脚轻，让小水欣赏他的军装，说：“小水，叔要走了，一去几年不回来，你给叔再擀两碗长条面吃吧！” 小水说：“金狗叔去大世界，人参燕窝什么吃不得，还看得上面条子？” 金狗说：“吃了你的长条面，叔走到天尽头，就会想起你！” 小水说：“你还能想到小水呀，你一展翅膀怕再不回仙游川了！” 金狗说：“金狗不是没心狼！” 小水偏说：“我就不擀！” 话是这般说，却去舀面调和搓揉，搓揉了四四一十六遍，面“醒”得软软的，筋，却真的没给金狗吃长条子面，一颗一颗包了一罗底饺子，竞也在一颗饺子里包上一枚硬币。说：“出远门不能吃长面，长面拉魂，会走得心不宁哩。吃饺子，囫囵囵的保你出外周全，将来真干出事来也好和人家田家巩家的娃们子一样！” 金狗喜欢了，却说：“田家巩家……哼，我倒不在眼里搁！你瞧着吧，我要穿就穿皮袄，不穿就光身子！” 小水说：“金狗叔有志气。你要能吃到那枚硬币，这话便会灵验的！ ” 这一顿金狗吃了三碗饺子，但没吃出硬币来，夹了一个饺子让小水尝，没想小水就把硬币吃在嘴里了。金狗一走，小水少了个说话的人，韩文举也没个跑小脚路买酒的人，日子寡了许多味。韩文举也就自那阵起，相好了不静岗寺里的和尚。这和尚学问深，熟知佛家经典，亦懂得人情世故，测字算卦，见韩文举有文墨，便教授了《六十四卦金钱课》观星座卜气象。韩文举掌握了此术，却越发与搭渡的妇女说浪话，察言观色，用六枚“宝通”铜钱推掐善恶凶吉、流年运气，嘻嘻哈哈打发自己的日子。这期间，小水在寂寞里悄悄发育，滚圆了肩膀，白皙了脖颈，胸部臀部显出曲线，人才十分地排场。一日，小水提了饭罐到船上来，让伯伯于阴凉里用膳，自个便把船摆进白腊蒿丛下给老人搓洗衣裳。白腊草已经扬花，飘一种红红的粉，煞是好看，就听见岸头有人喊摆渡，声极尖锐。小水摇船过去，摆渡的是田中正的侄女，艳阳里，妖妖地笑出两排细碎白牙。小水欢声大叫：“哎呀，是英英呀！收拾得好俊气！” 英英说：“真的俊气吗？怎不见路上男人家抢我？！抢去了也好，我是张口货，他得管我一天三顿好吃的，吃了人参想燕窝，还要吃他娘的心，看他肯不肯！” 小水就笑骂英英太“造孽”，拉着上船，伸手拧她那张薄薄的嘴，然后问：“是去白石寨吗？那里男人多，一见你真会把你吃！” 英英说：“吓，你还算是老同学哩，这么不关心人！我这是到镇上商店去上班呀！你不知道吗？” 小水真的不知道，当下就被激情所奋，说：“你有工作啦？！” 英英说：“农业社里再待下去，我真是要疯了呢！虽说在商店工作不算好工作，可好赖是坐到凉房下边了！你日后要扯什么紧俏布，你来找我，别人不行，你来还不走个后门吗？小水，你瞧瞧，我这件上衣怎么样？ ” 小水说：“有些艳乍了。” 英英说：“要艳乍，衣服就是给外人眼睛穿的嘛，要不谁注意呀？你也来一件吧！”说着就脱下上衣来让小水试。小水试穿了，一切合适。站在船头往水里一看，却忙脱下来，说：“ 我可穿不出去，你是工作人了，我是农民呀。” 两人说着许多亲热话，船到了对岸，英英下来往镇子去了，小水直看着她走上河街小巷，忽然间眼皮低下来，心里觉得空空的慌。默默将船摆过来，伯伯已吃好了饭，上船问道：“英英成工作人了？” 小水说：“嗯。” 韩文举说：“这田家，老少都不种庄稼了！” 小水并没有接伯伯的话，太阳下觉得身子很懒，就坐在船头看远处的河面。河面上升一层蓝雾，像火焰一样，且由近渐渐及远，末了在虚无飘渺之际，水波光影，似乎潮一样向船头泛来，其景灿烂。但每一次泛来，每一次仍留在原处。船那边长长的一声叹息，韩文举从舱里又取了酒来喝。突然说：“世事怎么说得清呢，我上学的那阵，田老七和我在一个班里，他学的什么？每一次考试都不及格，先生用板子打他手，都打肿了！说：‘竖子不可教也！’他就跑去耍枪杆打游击，我们还笑人家没个出息……可现在，咱是个船夫，人家门里……？小水说：“烦死了，伯伯！这话你不知说过多少次了？！”P15-17

这仍然是一本关于商州的书，但是我要特别声明：在这里所写到的商州，它已经不是地图上所标志的那一块行政区域划分的商州了，它是我虚构的商州，是我作为一个载体的商州，是我心中的商州。而我之所以还要沿用这两个字，那是我太爱我的故乡的缘故罢了。我是太不愿意再听到有关对号入座的闲话。在这本书里，我仅写了一条河上的故事，这条河我叫它州河。于我的设计中，商州是应该有这么一条河的，且这河又是商州唯一的大河。商州人称什么大的东西，总是喜欢以州来概括。他们说“走州过县”，那就指闯荡了许多大的世界，大凡能直接通往州里的公路，还一律称之为“官道 ”，一座州城简直是满天下的最辉煌的中心圣地。现在已经有许多人到商州去旅行考察，他们所带的指南是我以往的一些小说，却往往乘兴而去败兴而归，责骂我的欺骗。这全是心之不同而目之色异的原因，怨我是没有道理的。就说现在的州河虽然也是不真实的，但商州的河流多却是任何来人皆可体验的。这些河流几乎都发源于秦岭，后来都归于长江，但它们明显地不类同于北方的河，亦不是所谓南方的河，古怪得不可捉摸，清明而又性情暴戾，四月五月冬月腊月枯时几乎断流，夏秋二季了，却满河满沿不可一世，流速极紧，非一般人之见识和想象。若不枯不发之期，粗看似乎并无奇处，但主流道从不蹈一，走十里滚靠北岸，走十里倒贴南岸，故商州的河滩皆宽，“三十年河东，三十年河西 ”的成语在这里已经简化为一个符号“S”代替，阴阳师这么用，村里野叟妇孺没齿小儿也这么用。因此，我的这条州河便是一条我认为全中国的最浮躁不安的河。浮躁当然不是州河的美德，但它是州河不同于别河的特点，这如同它穿洞过峡吼声价天喜欢悲壮声势一样，只说明它还太年轻，事实也正如此，州河毕竟是这条河流经商州地面的一段上游，它还要流过几个省，走上千里上万里的路往长江去，往大海去。它的前途是越走越深沉，越走越有力量的。对于州河，我们不需要作过分的赞美，同时亦不需要作刻薄的指责，它经过了商州地面，是必由之路，更看好的是它现在流得无拘无束，流得随心所欲，以自己的存在流，以自己的经验流。 ××年前，孔子说：逝者如斯夫。我总疑心，这先生是在作州河考。 1986年6月平凹识于五味什字巷
