Author Description

赫尔曼·麦尔维尔（Herman Melville, 1819年8月1日—1891年9月28日），美国小说家、散文家和诗人。由于家境不好，做过农夫、职员、教师、水手、海军等职务，后来成为小说家，他以其海上经历为事实依据写成其寓言杰作《白鲸记》（1851年），这部小说被认为是美国最伟大的小说之一。英国作家毛姆在《世界十大小说家及其代表作》一书中对《白鲸记》的评价远在美国其他作家爱伦·坡与马克吐温之上。麦尔维尔生前默默无闻，穷愁潦倒以终，在《白鲸记》出版后七十年才暴得大名；他的作品还包括短篇小说，如《书记员巴特子比》（1856年）以及中篇小说《比利·巴德》（1924年出版）。
他的小说往往流露出对现代西方文明的憎恨、对下层人民的同情和对正义的人道主义的追求。他的某些作品（如《玛地》和《白鲸》）还凝聚着他对宇宙和人类本性问题的哲理探索。

蒸汽船之前的那个时代，或者说那个时候比现在更为频繁，沿着鳞次栉比的海港码头独自闲逛，偶然间会被一群古铜色的海员吸引住目光，那是身穿假日服装的军舰水兵或商船水手，获准许可上岸。某些情形之下他们会分列左右，或是像一队卫兵，几乎将同人当中某个卓越不凡的人物包围起来；那入跟他们一道前行，像是金牛星处在星座那些小星宿的拱卫之中。那个众所瞩目的对象，便是军事和商船海军都不那么乏味的时代里的“英俊水手”。身上并无一丝自命不凡的感觉，确切说来，是带着一种漫不经心浑然天成的王者气派，他像是在接受船员伙伴自发的敬意。
我又回想起那个有几分不寻常的事例。在利物浦，迄今半个世纪以前，在王子码头又脏又黑的高大街墙（老早就被拆除了的障碍物）的阴影下我见到一个普通水手，浑身漆黑，黑成那番模样，让你觉得他必定就是纯种的含族血统的非洲土著了。
