Content Description

Book Abstract

娘在家里唠叨着，心电感应，坐在车站台阶上的子路就打了个喷嚏。这个喷嚏打得惊天动地，连站在广场上的那个警察也回头往这边望望，子路有些不好意思，但立即矜持起来，面上平静如水，然后目光放远，瞧起西夏挤进了售票房前的一堆人群里。原本该西夏在这里守护行李子路去买票的，但子路的个子小，挤不到售票窗下，又不想从那些人的胳膊下钻来钻去，西夏就长胳膊长腿地去了。
西夏在人窝里挤得满头大汗，鞋踩脏了，发卡也掉了，好不容易买了票退出来喘气，旁边一个女人一直在看她，说：“这么漂亮的人，该有自己的私家车哩！”西夏说：“是吗？那我就得换老公呀！”那女人白皮净肉地笑了，说：“到哪儿旅游？”西夏说：“回婆家。”女人说：“哪儿的？”西夏说：“高老庄！”说罢自己也嗤地笑了，她想到了猪八戒，（《西游记》里的猪八戒也是高老庄上的人，西天的取经路上，动不动就要回去。那女人并不知道西夏发笑的意思，听说是去高老庄，就过来把西夏的手拉住，说高老庄是个好地方，她是去过的，而且现在还有个亲戚就在高老庄。西夏便觉亲近，问高老庄都有些什么好玩的。那女人说：有山，山深似海哩，这个时候去，柿饼板栗吃不到，杏子却下树了，你若坐车，路边常有人叫喊买呀买呀，你把一张钱丢下去，卖杏人就把杏子往车上撂，你没有接够数，他们会撵着车跑呀跑的，还给你扔！沟畔里到处有古松，苔藓和蕨草就从树根到树梢附着了长，一嘟噜一嘟噜的藤蔓便垂下来，有红嘴白尾的鸟在里边叫。你见过连翘吗，中药铺里有一味药叫连翘，谁能想到连翘竞长那么大的一蓬，花开得是那般黄，佛黄。西夏就兴奋起来，问还有些什么，那女人说有太壶寺，有一猫腰就能打出一桶水的泉窝，桶里会有七条八条小虾蟆，高老庄人不吃虾蟆。还有白云湫。西夏把扑撒到脸前的乱发拢了拢，问白云湫是什么，那女人说，是个湖，是个沟，是一沟的老树林子，人都说那里住着神仙也住着魔鬼，是天下最怪的地方，但我没去过。女人很遗憾，西夏也陪着她遗憾了，又拢拢扑撒到了脸上的乱发，骂了一句“这头发真烦！”女人说：要去高老庄，得剪个短发的，到处是梢树林子，雨后进去捡菌子，长头发就不方便，高老庄的狗都是细狗，一生下来主人就把尾巴剁了。说着从自己头上摘下一只发卡给了西夏。西夏不愿无故接受赠品，谢绝不要，但不行，再要付钱时，女人说这能值几个钱呀，动手帮西夏把头发拢整齐，别上了发卡，直叫道漂亮。西夏谢谢着这位陌路相逢的女人，邀请她去见见子路：说不定论起来，她的哪位亲戚还是子路的什么亲戚，世界说大，大得很，说小又小得就那么几个人呢！但那女人却不想去见子路，说她是电视台的记者，得立即去很远的地方出差呀，就拜拜，没在人群不见了。
西夏返回车站的台阶上，子路却不在了那里。举目四顾，他双肩挂着两个大提包，腰弓着，越发矮得像个孩子，在一家小店铺门口和人争执哩。西夏就喊：“子路，子路！”子路过来，一脸的恼怒，晃着手里的空水杯，骂那些小店主啬皮，跑了三家都不愿给他倒一杯白开水的。西夏说：“你给人家掏两角钱，谁不会热情卖给你？”子路说：“要是高老庄，水拿井盛哩！”西夏拿了水杯转身要去买，子路说：“不喝了，气都气饱了，票买到手了吗？”西夏说：“买到了，你猜我见到谁了？”子路说：“谁？”西夏说：“白白净净的，鼻梁上有一颗痣，她说她亲戚也在高老庄。送我了一个发卡，别上好看不好看？”子路说：“好看，你别什么都好看。她亲戚也是高老庄的，怎不领来拉拉话？”西夏说：“人家忙着出差呀，是电视台的记者，人家是记者哩！”子路说：“那算啥的，不就是拿个黑驴毬往领导嘴里塞着的工作嘛！”西夏说：“这都是教授说的话？”两人就扑扑哧哧笑起来。地道口前的栏杆下坐着一个女人和她的孩子，孩子在看着子路和西夏笑，子路和西夏也就笑了。子路和西夏已经不笑了，孩子还在笑着。子路就给孩子做鬼脸儿，把两只耳朵往前拉，撅着嘴，像肥猪的样子，孩子并没有反应，反应的却是孩子的母亲，她微笑地向子路招手。这是一个白面长身的女人，子路就走近去，女人对孩子说：“叫叔叔。”孩子说：“叔叔。”女人说：“让你好好吃饭，你不好好吃，再不好好吃你就只长叔叔这么高！”子路脸腾地红起来，但子路毕竟是教授，他说：“你娘说得对，要好好吃饭哩，个头长不高受人歧视的。”女人这才意识到自己话没说好，忙抱歉她不是那个意思，子路却严肃地走开了。
两人走进车站，西夏问：“和人家说什么了？”子路说：“她问我做什么事？我说是教授。她说做教授好哇，可怜她只是初中毕业……”西夏说：“瞧着人家漂亮了把什么都说？！”子路说：“她漂亮？你一来这里还有漂亮人？！”子路把两个提包都提过来，小跑着跟在西夏的身后，像个驮驴儿。
车是要路过高老庄而往西南的湖北去的，后窗上破裂了玻璃，凉快是凉快，尘土却迷进来，头发很快就粘成一绺一片。出城后一个小时，车驶进山区，西夏万般兴奋，虽然旁边的窗子一打开，前边那个老头的脑袋伸在窗外，呕吐的污水会雨星一样飘过来，她还是不停地要打开窗子，大惊小怪着外边的景色。而子路一上车就坐在那里把眼睛闭上了，他并没有睡意，只是竭力要从脑海里抹去那个白面长身女人的形象，但女人的话不去思量又怎能不思量？十五年前，同样在这条路上，父亲送子路去省城上学，撕棉扯絮的雪下着，卡车上没有座位又没有篷顶，人插萝卜般地挤坐在车厢，腿再发困发麻也不敢动，一动就再也没地方坐下去了。子路实在是忍耐不住，拔出一条腿来揉搓，他担心时间长了腿要患关节炎的。但将腿揉搓了一会，旁边的一个女人却说你抓了我的腿了！这怎么可能，他在强辩着。女人却说你是高老庄的吧，子路说是高老庄的，又怎么啦？女人说：瞧你高老庄的男人有这么长的腿吗？！他把腿再往上抬，果然发现这是女人的腿，一条细而长的腿。这件事烙铁一样永远在子路的心上留下疤痕，他是带着高老庄男人特有的矮体短腿在省城读完了大学，也在高老庄男人的矮体短腿的自卑中培养了好学奋斗的性格，成为了一位教授，又出版了一本关于汉语语法研究的专著。十五年后，又是女人嘲弄了他的个头矮小——奉承女人能使一个卑贱的男人崇高起来，以貌取人却是鉴别浅薄女人的标准——子路闭着眼睛无声地笑了，他想，那女人是不知道他是谁，如果她是高老庄人，或者是家乡那个县的人，甚至她如果在省城的大学读过书，她就知道子路是什么人物了！

Introduction

每一本书有一本书的命运，这我是深信不疑的。出版过的那几部长篇，《浮躁》最幸运，它以各种版本已出过十多次了，《白夜》、《土门》也再版过数次，唯有《废都》和《高老庄》不济。《废都》虽未正式再版，却每年都能在市面上见到新的盗版本，且盗版本越来越豪华，它属于没有户口的盲流者到处打工。相比起来，《高老庄》出身尚好，但在太白文艺社初版后，在国内，除长江文艺社搞过一次评注本，它就很寂寞。我不明白一些出版社约稿时信誓旦旦，但一次性印个大数目后为什么就撒手不管了他们急功近利，不做长销书的努力，损害作者和读者的利益，也损害了他们的利益。盗版书自然要乘虚而入，而《高老庄》的盗版本惨不忍睹，纸张粗劣，装订混乱，字小得需用放大镜方能看清。“金收获丛书”提出他们再版《高老庄》，令我欣慰，有一种将良家妇女从妓院解救出来的心情。
我曾写过一段祷词的，是在家中焚香供神时用的，我把它抄在这里，也算作对《高老庄》，以及我写过的所有书的命运祈祷：
神啊，当你降临在了大堂，一切安谧祥和就弥漫在空气之中。敬燃了香柱，霭蓝的轻缕袅袅而起，我听见了来自悠远的响动，它悄无声息又惊涛裂岸，我看见了广邈的土地和江河，高阔的天空和星界。是谁在唤我的名字——平凹，平凹——英明伟大的神啊，我原来是你的孩子！我默默地呼吸着，静静地用身与心体会，不断生出的疑惑、烦恼、卑怯、愚昧在消化，滋长的是灵魂的安妥，文字的智慧，生命的健康和欢乐。多么感谢你啊，神，我来源于爱，承受着爱，我将永远爱着你和你创造的这个无所不在的世界。
