Author Description

樋口一叶(ひぐちいちよう)，(1872～1896)，日本女小说家、歌人。本名夏。生于东京，师从半井桃水，因患肺病早逝。以描写女性生活的短篇小说名世，被誉为“古日本最后的女性”。2004年日本政府将其肖像印制于五千元纸币之上。

林文月，台湾彰化县人，1933年出生于上海日租界。1952年入读台湾大学中文系，师从台静农等名师，后留校任教，专攻六朝文学、中日比较文学。历任美国华盛顿大学、斯坦福大学、伯克利大学，捷克查理斯大学客座教授。作品曾获中国时报文学奖、台北文学奖、中兴文艺奖等。

暗樱上这两家之间，只隔着竹篱笆。共用的井水，既深且清。开在屋檐下的梅花，一树两家春，连香气都分享着。这两家是中村家和园田家。园田家的主人前年去世，由二十一岁的年轻人良之助继承，据说是某学校的通学生。中村这一家，只有一个女儿。原来也是有儿子的，但早天折，就剩下这么个宝贝，如同掌中之珠一般宠爱着，唯恐风吹拂发簪上的饰花，但愿她能享鹤寿干岁，遂以 “千代”命名。可真是天下父母心啊。人说：“白檀双叶已闻芳香”，当她三叶、四叶地逐渐成长时，世人纷纷都已经期待日后的姿色了。春山微雨花稍绽，更添增览眺的景色，那教人惊艳时节究竟在何时？犹如月影穿松叶，绰绰约约十六岁，梳起了成人高高的发髻，髻上系着一只扎染的蝴蝶结，真个是万绿丛中一点红，在哪儿都醒目。“中村家的小姐”，人人争相谈论她。生为美人也是够麻烦的。习惯真是有趣。当年，北风中放风筝时，电线杆老嫌它们碍事儿。那是过去从前的事情了；可良之助、干代这两个人相见时，总改不了往日玩儿布偶的心。虽然发型姿态都改变了，却仿佛也没怎么注意到，依旧是“阿良”、“阿千”地亲热叫唤着。谈谈笑笑，有时甚至还吵起架来。“你甭再来了！”“来干吗？不来就不来！”说着说着，互相赌气，却两天不见面又来道歉：“昨天，是我不好。以后不会再跟你那么使性子了。原谅我罢。”给她这样子一说，自是如春冰之化解，“不，是我不对。”结果不外乎如此。虽然，自己没有妹妹，若有之，大概也就是这般可爱的罢。她笑容可掬地拉着他的袖子说：“阿良，昨天做了个好梦。梦见你学校毕业，不知道就的是什么职，戴了一顶高帽子，坐在一辆黑色马车上，要进洋房子哩。”“人家说，梦是相反的。可别被马车撞倒才好！”说着大笑起来。这边则是颦眉道：“说什么话呀！今儿礼拜天，你可是哪儿都别去。”这话，与受过当今现代化教育的身分很不相称，盖因为真情关怀之故。这厢既然没有隔阂，那厢自亦不客套。所谓浮世忧虑，这两个年轻人晓都不晓得，尽是欢笑过日子。这一天是春日二月中，倒是尚有些料峭春寒，约好去赏梅，又值德大寺的祭日。两人手挽着手，倒是挺暖和的。 “阿良，别忘了跟你约的事儿哟。” “嗯，没问题。不会忘记的。只是，……约的是什么呀？” “瞧你。临出门还那样子拜托你的呢……” “哦，对啦。想起来了。你想看卖菜阿七故事的西洋镜，是不是？” “咦，胡扯！” “不然，是那个乞丐扮野熊的把戏？” “算啦，算啦。我回家了。” “道歉，道歉。方才都是胡扯。中村家千代小姐交代的，怎么可能是这些。我，良之助所奉命的是……” “好，啥也不要了。” “别生气。边走边吵，路人会笑的呀。” “都是你，讲那种话！” “所以不是跟你道歉过了吗？瞧，尽顾斗嘴，杂货摊儿都走过了。” “哎呀，那怎么办。不知前面还有没有？” “谁知道。刚刚说啥也不要的人，在哪儿呀？” “不要再讲那些了。” 争来争去，终究还是和乐一条路。路旁有许多树。“来这儿。”一个招手，另一个就跑过去。木屐踩在地上，发出卡郎克隆的声音。那弹琴的盲女，可是今世的“朝颜”吗？“露未唏兮光照花，可怜微雨稍稍落。”“吃点儿甜品好吗？”那招徕顾客的声音倒也甜甜的。另一旁卖的是成烧饼。隔邻互竞，相安无事，可真有趣。 “阿千，你看看，那右边第二棵。” P1-3

翻译的目的，简单说，是把一种语文转换成另一种语文。懂得两种或两种以上语文的人，时则会有需要为自己，或为别人做这种“翻译”的工作。
三十年代出生于上海虹口江湾路的我，作为台湾人法律上隶属日本公民，而闸北虹口一带当时为日本租界，所以到了上学年龄，我就被指定去上海市第八国民学校读书。那所日本人设立的学校，除我和我的妹妹之外，其余都是日本孩子。说实在的，我们当时还以为自己也是日本孩子，只是家里有些生活习惯和别的同学们略微不同而已。
我的启蒙教育是日语文。我读日本书，也用日本语文思想，或表达心事，似乎是自自然然的；直到小学五年级的时候，中日战争结束，日本投降，中国胜利，我们台湾人的身份由日本籍变成了中国籍。次年，我们举家由上海乘船回到台湾。台湾是我们的故乡，却是一个陌生的故乡。
在陌生的故乡，我们开始了新生活。我听不太懂台湾话，而且在推行国语的环境之下，校内是禁止使用日语的。老师用台语解释国语。从小学六年级开始，我突然需要适应两种新语文。如今回想起来，大概我的翻译经验就是从那时候开始。我的脑中经常需要把中国语文翻译成日本语文。这样的习惯，使我在读大学和研究所的时期，能够驾轻就熟地为台北东方出版社的两套少年读物：“世界名人传记”和“世界文学名著”译成了五本书。那些书都是经由日本人改写为适合少年阅读的文体，所以几乎没有什么问题和困难。
任职大学之后，教学与研究成为生活的主轴，除了有限的一些日文的汉学研究论著之外，不再有空闲执译笔了。至于再度促使我提笔从事翻译工作，实缘起应邀参加一九七二年日本笔会主办的“日本文化研究国际会议”。依大会规定，参加者需提出一篇与日本文化相关的论文。我以日文书成《桐壺と長恨歌》提出发表。其后，我将日文的论文自译为中文：《源氏物语桐壶与长恨歌》，在台湾大学《中外文学月刊》刊载，同时为了读者便利而试译了《源氏物语》首帖《桐壶》，附录于论文之后，那篇日本中世纪文学深受白居易《长恨歌》的影响，中文的读者感觉既熟悉又陌生，产生莫大的好奇与期待，透过杂志的编辑部鼓励我继续译介全书。我在没有十分把握之下，答应下来，开始逐月在《中外文学》刊载的长期翻译工作。费时五年半，共六十六期而译竟了百万言的《源氏物语》全书。
那五六年的时间里，我教书、做研究、又翻译，过着与时间竞走的生活，十分辛劳，却也感觉非常充实。翻译遂成为我生活中的一个重要部分。我选择日本古典文学作品为自己翻译的对象，是基于两个理由的：一者，日本文化从中世纪以来深受我国隋唐文化影响，而且日本人早已有系统地译介了中国的重要著作；相较之下，我们对日本的文学作品则相当冷漠。虽然近二十余年来逐渐有人译出日本文学，但以近、现代作品为主，古典文学的译介仍嫌不够。再者，我个人具备日语文根底，其后从事中国古典文学的教学与研究，或可在这一方面略尽绵薄之力，弥补我们所当做而未做的事情，故自一九七三年以来，自我惕励断续译出了《源氏物语》（一九七三—一九七八）、《枕草子》（一九八六—一九八八）、《和泉式部日记》（一九九二）、《伊势物语》（一九九五—一九九六）等四本平安时代的日本文学名著，以及十九世纪明治时代的樋口一叶短篇小说集《十三夜》（二〇〇一—二〇〇四）。
以上五本书，前四本的著成年代都在千年以上，最后一本也在一百多年前。每一个国家的语文都会随时间而有所变化。现在的日本人阅读古人的这些文学作品，多数会觉得很困难，所以与谢野晶子（一八七八—一九四二）以降，已经有多种现代日语译的《源氏物语》等书出版了。
我的中译本诸书，虽然采取白话文，但是仍有许多地方非译文本身所能传达清楚，或者表现原文的巧妙之处，则不得不借助些注释。注释之中，特别值得注意的是，原著里引用日本的古老诗歌或隐喻，乃至于唐代以前的中国古诗文，因此对于中国读者而言，明白了这些道理，就会觉得既陌生而又熟悉，格外亲近动人。
《源氏物语》、《枕草子》、《伊势物语》和《十三夜》即将在大陆以简体字横排出版。容我在此感谢南京译林出版社所有帮助我促成此事的各位。
