一大群新来的见习住院医生们正聚集在恩巴卡德罗县立医院色调灰暗的大礼堂里，他们都是刚刚从医学院毕业的。刚才听到的三个人是其中仅有的女性。
恩巴卡德罗县立医院是旧金山最老的医院，也是全美国历史最长的医院之一。在1989年发生的大地震中，上帝和旧金山的居民们开了个大玩笑，却让这家医院安然无恙地立在那儿。这是一个由多座砖石大楼组成的丑陋无比的建筑群，占据了超过三个街区的地段，因多年积下的尘垢而颜色发灰。
主楼入口处往里是个大候诊室，排列着供病人和探视者使用的硬木椅。墙面因为多少年代反反复复的粉刷而漆灰斑驳脱落；走道因为成千上万的病人坐着轮椅或者拄着拐杖或者使用助行架经过，而磨损得高低不平。整个楼群内部覆盖着因年代久远而形成的沉腐的油腻腻的光泽。
恩巴卡德罗县立医院是座城中之城。医院的雇员超过九千人，包括四百多位医生，一百五十位半时制志愿医生，八百多位住院医生和三千多名护士，再加上技师、辅助人员和其他技术人员。上面的楼层是一个完整的系统，包括十二间手术室，中央供应室，一间骨髓库，中心调度室，三间危重病房，一间艾滋病房和两千多张病床。

这些新来的见习医生们有数不清的问题要问。
“没有吗?那好。你们在医院的工作将从明天正式开始。明天早晨5点30分在总台报到。祝你们走运。”
情况介绍会到此结束。人们向各个出口走去，伴随着兴奋交谈的嗡嗡低语声。三位女士发现她们正站在一起。
“还有别的女人吗?”
“我想都在这儿了吧。”

这所套房公寓在马里纳区的菲尔伯特大街上。对她们三人来讲真是好得不能再好了。三间卧室，两间浴室，新地毯，有洗衣间，有汽车停车泊位，还提供洗衣机、冰箱、炊具等。室内布置着老式的西尔斯·鲁波克式家具，但是很清爽干净。
三个女人把房间和设施巡视一番后，霍尼说，我认为这太可爱了。”
“我也这么想!”凯特表示同意。
她们看着佩姬。
“那就让我们把它租下来吧。”
她们当天下午就全搬进了公寓。公寓看门人帮她们把行李搬上楼。
“你们要在医院工作，”他说。“都是护士，啊?”
“是医生，”凯特纠正他。
他怀疑地看着她：医生?你是说，就像是，真正的医生?”
“是的，就像是真正的医生，”佩姬告诉他。
他轻蔑地咕哝着。“说实话，我要是需要看病的话，可不愿让个女人来给我检查身体。”“我们会记住你说的话的。”
“电视机在哪儿?”凯特问。“我没见到嘛。”

她们看着他走出房间。
凯特模仿他的口气说：“都是护士，啊?”她喷着鼻子哼了一声。“大男子主义者。好让我们先把卧室挑一下吧。”
“我随便哪间都行，”霍尼柔声说道。
她们查看了三间卧室。其中主卧室比另两间要大一些。
凯特说：你干吗不挑这间大的，佩姬?这个地方是你找到的。”
佩姬点点头：那好吧。”
她们各自到自己的房间里，开始打开行李。佩姬小心翼翼地从手提箱里取出一个相框，里边嵌着一张照片。照片上是一位三十岁出头的男子。他很有魅力，戴着一副黑框眼镜，看上去像个学者。佩姬把照片放在床头柜上，紧挨着一摞信。
凯特与霍尼信步走进来。“我们一块儿出去弄顿晚饭吃吃怎么样?”
“我收拾停当了。”佩姬说。
凯特看见照片，于是就问，这人是谁?”佩姬露出笑容。“这是我的未婚夫，我们要结婚了。他是医生，为世界卫生组织工作。他名叫阿尔弗雷德·特纳。他此刻正在非洲工作，但就要到旧金山来了，我们可以在一起了。”
“你真幸运，”霍尼若有所思地说。“他看上去真好。”
佩姬看着她。“你是不是也和什么人好上了?”

回到公寓以后，佩姬兴奋得难以入睡。她躺在床上，考虑着未来。窗外街上传来一阵汽车相撞声，然后是人们的叫喊声。在佩姬的脑海中，这些声音渐渐化为一片回忆，非洲土著人的叫嚷声、歌声还有枪声。她刚被带回到东非丛林中的小村子里，就落入一场殊死的部族战争之中。
佩姬怕极了。“他们要来杀死我们!”
父亲把她搂在怀里。“他们不会伤害我们的，亲爱的。我们是在这儿帮助他们的。他们知道我们是他们的朋友。”
