相对来说，网络上的信息比报纸略多，其中一个以八卦闻名的论坛发起了萧木到底为何自杀的讨论。发起人原文转发了萧木的遗书和自杀的视频，并配上煽情的文字。而且，这个身份不明的发起人还从视频中截了很多图，一张一张地发布在论坛里。照片中，萧木脸色惨白、双目微闭，花格子衬衫左边袖子上乌黑的血迹清晰可见，与暗紫色的嘴唇遥相呼应。发起人这样写道：“所有选择死亡的人，都有无法继续生存的理由。我们要为每一个坚强的生命高唱赞歌，也要为每一个脆弱的灵魂送去祝福。生存与死亡，都是对生命的一种选择。”
尽管有触目惊心的照片和催人泪下的文字，但反应者并不多。评论大约有一百来条。在这个人们习惯于用点赞来表达关注的时代，有关萧木的这条新闻中有四个回帖获得了最多的关注和支持。
第一个回帖：今生的光熄灭，来世的灯点亮。所有不去争取希望的人，都是生活的懦夫。
第二个回帖：活着多好，搞不懂为什么要去死。从视频上看，这不像是炒作。作为一名专业医生，我能够判断出视频中此人的流血量已经超出了导致休克的最大值，几无生还的希望。在此我劝诫所有的人，活着就好好活着，生命不可逆，千万珍惜。
第三个回帖：每天都会有人死去，不足为奇。
第四个回帖：从来没有听说过这位作者，现在她终于用死亡让我认识了她。但悲哀的是，她怎么连一部作品都没有？有可能是一种炒作，只是为了出名。

《绝望收藏室》是我的第五部长篇小说，与上一部长篇小说《隐蔽的脸》有些关联。在《隐蔽的脸》中，我写了一个“爱到绝望，谋而后杀”的故事，整部作品充满孤独与绝望。其实，希望的光芒就在主人公的眼前闪烁，只是她没有及时感知。我隐约觉得那太残忍，所以在《绝望收藏室》中，我给主人公赋予了更强大的力量。无论生活的隧道多幽长，无论人生的天空多黑暗，在不远处总有一丝光为我们指明方向照亮前路。
从《隐蔽的脸》到《绝望收藏室》，故事的主人公由若童变成了萧木，主题也由在绝望中毁灭变成了自我救赎。
萧木童年孤独、生活不幸、理想幻灭，即便是那份最珍贵的爱情也经历了九九八十一难，才有情人终成眷属。一个柔弱的女人能承受的最大痛苦，萧木全部遭遇。尽管如此，萧木从来不是人生的弱者。从某种程度讲，她是一个生活的强者。在艰难险阻面前她从未低过头，一次都没有。在孤独的童年里，她尽力找到快乐；在理想破灭时，她坚信总有一天能够成功；在最绝望时，她没有放弃寻找失散的爱人。在颠沛流离和无尽的放逐里，萧木在网上开设了“绝望收藏室”，专门收集充满绝望的故事，通过交流为陷入绝望的人带去希望。在拯救他人的过程中，萧木同时也获得了自我救赎。她更加平静，更加坚韧。
故事的讲述者墨非曾是著名作家，在文坛具有相当大的影响力和号召力。但是，他坠入了人生的低谷：婚姻破裂、创作枯竭，生活一片狼藉。在与萧木的交往中，他逐渐找到生活的意义和创作的冲动。后来，墨非接手萧木留下的书店，并更名为“灯塔”。这个书店就像夜空中最亮的星星，照亮每一个在夜色中前行的路人。

雨果曾说：“痛苦能够孕育灵魂和精神的力量，灾难是傲骨的乳娘，祸患则是人杰的乳汁。”2004年印度洋海啸之后，泰国烤肉摊主素拉威说：“我明白了一个道理，就是越是困难越要努力，这样才能生存下来。”所以，海啸之后素拉威将他的小店更名为“拼搏店”。依然是这场灾难，海啸夺走了泰国咸水村100多个孩子的生命，也留下更多的孤儿。在海滩的一个渔场边，一位老者对那些孤苦伶仃的孤儿说：“生活就像渔网，破了还可以再补。但人，一定要有活下去的信心。”
