爱玛•多诺霍（Emma Donoghue）

今天我五岁了。昨天晚上我在衣柜里睡着的时候还是四岁，但当我在黑黢黢的夜里从床上醒来时就变成五岁了，一派胡言嘛。在此之前，我三岁，两岁，然后一岁，零岁。“我负岁过吗？”
“嗯？”妈伸了个大大的懒腰。
“在天堂里。我有没有负一岁、负两岁、负三岁……”
“没有，在你从天而降之前是不算岁数的。”
“穿过天窗。我凑巧来到了你的肚子里，你就不再忧伤了。”
“你说得对。”妈伸出手打开了台灯，他总能嗖地一下让所有东西都亮起来。
我刚好来得及闭上眼，然后睁开一只眼，接着两只眼都睁开了。
“我哭到再也流不出一滴眼泪，”她告诉我。“我就躺在这里数秒。”
“数了多少秒？”我问她。
“成百万上亿。”
“不，可到底有多少秒呢？”
“我数糊涂了，”妈说。
“然后你就不停地祈求一个宝宝，直到肚子变大。”
她咧嘴一笑。“我能感到你在踢。”

我想方设法解开了花结，把纸展平，是一幅画，就用铅笔画的，没上颜料。我没看明白画的是什么，接着我把画掉了个个。“我！”就像是照镜子，但画面更丰富，我的头、胳膊和罩在T恤睡衣里的肩膀。“为什么这个我眼睛闭着？”

我跳上摇椅，从架子上的工具盒里拿了一枚大头针，又减少一枚意味着现在一枚也没剩下，五枚都用掉了。本来有六枚的，但有一枚不见了。一枚用来固定摇椅后面的《西方艺术的伟大杰作作品三号：圣母子与圣安妮、施洗者圣约翰》，一枚用来固定浴缸旁边的《西方艺术的伟大杰作作品八号：日出印象》，一枚用来固定蓝色章鱼，一枚用来固定那幅疯马的画，名为《西方艺术的伟大杰作作品十一号：格尔尼卡》。这些杰作是跟着麦片一起来的，但章鱼是我做的。浴缸上面的水蒸气把他弄得有点翘了。我把妈的惊喜之作别在床头软木砖的正中央。
她摇摇头。“不要放在那儿。”
她不想让老尼克看见。“要么衣柜的后面？”我问。
“好主意。”
衣柜是木制的，所以我不得不非常用力地按大头针。我关上她那可笑的门，尽管我们已经给铰链抹过了玉米油，他们还总是嘎吱作响。我从板条间隙看过去，可太暗了。我把衣柜打开一道缝偷偷看，那幅秘密之作除了灰色的细线条外白成一片。妈蓝色的裙子挂在我熟睡的眼前，我指的是画里的眼睛，而裙子却是真的挂在衣柜里的裙子。
