Book Abstract

穿过工业城镇时，你会在迷宫中晕头转向。这个迷宫到处都是被烟熏得发黑的小砖房，包围在毫无规划的泥泞胡同和灰不溜秋的院子中，院子里到处都是臭气熏天的垃圾箱、成堆的待洗脏衣物和半废弃的厕所。房子的内部结构大同小异，房间数目一般在两间到五间。房子的客厅很相似，大约十到十五英尺见方，带一个开放式厨房；稍大的房子会有个洗涤间，小的那种则把水槽和龙头安在客厅里。房屋后面是院子，或者几个房子共用一个院子，大小刚够容纳垃圾桶和厕所。没有一个房间是通有热水的。尽管住在这里的都是矿工，每天只要工作就会从头到脚弄得黑乎乎，可我想，即便你顺着这些街区走上几英里也找不到一间可以洗澡的房子。在厨房里装一个热水系统其实很容易，但是建造者为了能让每套房屋节省大约十英镑就没有装，而且建房的时候压根就没人想过矿工也是需要洗澡的。
