Author Description

安东·巴甫洛维奇·契诃夫（1860年1月29日－1904年7月15日），是俄国19世纪末期后一位批判现实主义艺术大师，与莫泊桑和欧·亨利并称为“世界三大短篇小说家”，是一个有强烈幽默感的作家，他的小说紧凑精炼，言简意赅，给读者以独立思考的余地。其剧作对20世纪戏剧产生了很大的影响。他坚持现实主义传统，注重描写俄国人民的日常生活，塑造具有典型性格的小人物，借此真实反映出当时俄国社会的状况。他的作品的三大特征是对丑恶现象的嘲笑与对贫苦人民的深切的同情，并且其作品无情地揭露了沙皇统治下的不合理的社会制度和社会的丑恶现象。他被认为19世纪末俄国现实主义文学的杰出代表。

朱宪生，1947年2月出生，江西南昌人，*名俄罗斯文学研究家、翻译家，上海师范大学教授、博士生导师。二十世纪八十年代中期留学苏联，攻研俄罗斯文学。主要译*有《俄罗斯抒情诗史》、《在诗与散文之间——论屠格涅夫的创作与文体》、《天鹅的歌唱——论俄罗斯作家》、《屠格涅夫传》、《普希金传》、《屠格涅夫全集》（合译）、《罪与罚》、《战争与和平》（合译）、《契诃夫短篇小说精选》等二十余部，对中国俄罗斯文学研究和翻译作出了贡献。

《名家译丛：契诃夫短篇小说集（全译本）》：
我平生见过的房子太多了，有大有小，有砖砌的，也有木头盖的，还有新旧不一的，但有一座房子在我脑海中留下的印象却特别深刻。它并不是什么豪宅，其实就是一座小房子而已。它很小，只有一个小小的楼梯和三个窗子，极像一个戴包发帽的矮小、驼背的老太婆。墙是白色的，屋顶上盖着瓦，还有一个泥灰斑驳的烟囱。整座房子掩映在房主的祖父和曾祖父们栽种的桑树、槐树、杨树的绿荫中，如站在树荫之外，便无法看见这座房子。不过，这些郁郁葱葱的树木并没有妨碍它成为城里的建筑之一。它宽阔的院子与其他绿树成荫的院落一道连成了一排，成为了莫斯科街道的一部分。不过从来没有人驾车经过这条街，行人也很稀少。
小房子的护窗板总是紧闭着：住在里面的人不需要光线，光线对他们没什么用处。窗户也从来没有被打开过，因为房子里的人不喜欢新鲜空气。那些长年生活在桑树、槐树和牛蒡中的人，对自然界是麻木的。上帝只给予了那些在别墅里住的人以理解大自然之美的能力，其余的人对它则茫然不知。不过，人们向来就不珍惜那些数量太多的东西。俗话说得好，“一日．拥有，不足珍惜”，甚至有时一旦拥有了，就开始讨厌所拥有的东西了。房子的四周可以说是人间的天堂，绿树成荫，鸟雀成群。可房子里面呢？唉！夏天又热又闷。到了冬天，就像澡堂一样，闷得让人喘不过气来，还散发着煤球的气味。这房子整个让人觉得无聊、寂寞……很久以前，我第一次造访了这问小房子：受房子的主人契卡玛索夫上校的委托，去探望他的妻子和女儿。我对这次探访记忆犹新，甚至想忘都忘不了。
请您设想一下：当您从前堂走进客厅时，一个矮小、虚胖、四十岁上下的女人用恐惧和好奇的目光盯着您。就凭您是个“陌生人”，是个“年轻力壮”的客人，就足以让她感到异常惊讶和害怕了。您的手里既没拿锤子，也没拿斧头或枪，还友好地向她微笑，可她还是以惊恐的神色来迎接您。
“很荣幸也很高兴见到您，请问您是？”这位上了年纪的女人用颤抖的声音问您，不过您肯定知道，她就是女主人契卡玛索娃。
于是，您便进行自我介绍，并说明了此行的目的。恐惧和惊奇是没有了，马上被尖细而高兴的“啊”声和兴奋的眼神所取代。这“啊”声仿佛有回声似的，从前堂传到大厅，从大厅传到客厅，又从客厅传到厨房……就这样一直传到了地下室。很快，整座房子都弥漫着声调不同的、兴奋的“啊”声。您在客厅那张柔软、暖和的大沙发上落座不到五分钟，就可以听见莫斯科所有的大街上都有人发出这种“啊”声。
房间里散发着驱虫粉和新羊皮靴的气味。羊皮靴用小布巾包着，被放在我身边的椅子上。窗台上放着天竺葵花，还挂着薄纱裙。一群肥硕的苍蝇在抹布上爬来爬去。墙上有一幅主教的油画像，镜框一角的玻璃已经裂开了。主教旁边依次挂着先辈们的肖像，他们的脸都呈柠檬色。桌上摆着织针、一团毛线和一只尚未织完的袜子。地板上放着一些裁剪用的纸样和一件织工精细的黑色女上衣。隔壁房问里有两个惶恐不安、不知所措的老太婆正从地板上拾起裁衣用的纸样和画笔……“对不起，我们家实在是太乱了！”契卡玛索娃说道。
契卡玛索娃一边跟我说话，一边难为情地斜视着房门，门后的老太婆们一直在收拣着纸样。似乎连房门都觉得有些不好意思，时而开一条缝，时而又关上。
“喂、你有什么事？”契卡玛索娃朝门外问道。
“父亲从库尔斯克寄给我的那个领结在哪儿？”门后传来一个女人的声音。
“哎呀。玛丽娅。你怎么能……哎呀，你怎么可以……我们家现在有外人呢。……你去问问露凯丽娅吧……”“瞧我们的法语说得多地道啊！”我似乎从契卡玛索娃那双由于得意而光彩熠熠的眼里听到了这样一句话。
房门很快被打开了，我看见一个瘦高的少女，十八九岁，穿着一件黄色腰带的薄纱连衣裙。我现在还记得，裙子的腰带上挂着一把珍珠母色的扇子。她进来后，向我问了声好。她那高高的、镶着几颗青春痘的鼻子泛起了红晕，然后从鼻子红到了眼帘，最后红到两颊。
“我女儿！”契卡玛索娃像唱歌似的说道，“玛涅琪卡。这个年轻人是……”我作了自我介绍，并对如此之多的裁剪纸样表示了惊讶。母女俩乖下了眼帘。
