若热·亚马多（Jorge Amado，1912—2001），巴西著名作家，巴西文学院终身院士，多次获诺贝尔文学奖提名。他在近七十年的文学生涯中创作了三十多部长篇和短篇小说，以及诗歌、散文，多以现实主义笔法展示时代变迁，绘就一幅幅巴西社会风俗画卷，被誉为巴西的国民作家。作品被译成数十种文字，在世界各地出版。

经弗洛尔太太精心准备，聚会办得很出色。按照巴伊亚州医药公会连选连任的理事长西尔维奥·费雷拉博士非常中肯的话说，“为庆祝两个孪生的生灵幸福地结合一周年而举办的活动获得了圆满成功”。他举杯向“我们最尊敬的第二司库和他的妻子，同样可敬、品貌双全的典范弗洛尔太太”祝酒。
弗洛尔太太曾告诉克莱门特神父只有为数有限的几位好友参加聚会。但是，神父刚刚迈进门槛就发现，屋子里已经挤得满满的。特奥多罗博士德高望重，弗洛尔太太和蔼可亲，难怪这么多人前来参加。宾客当中，有医药界的头面人物，业余管弦乐团的同事，商界代表，美味与艺术烹调学校现在和以前的学员。在老朋友当中，最为显要的应当数腰缠万贯的马加·帕特尔诺斯特罗太太和“金脑袋”卢伊斯·恩里克博士了。克莱门特神父顾不上问候东道主夫妇，首先拥抱了这位众人敬仰的美学大师：他的大作《巴伊亚州历史》刚刚获得了学者们望眼欲穿的学院奖，“足以证明其真正的学术价值”（见《午报》《图书与作者》专栏里儒诺特·西尔韦拉的文章）。

请看，女人圈子里的内乌扎·马塞多太太（当然不止她一位）和那几个婆娘形成多么鲜明的对照。她举止端庄谨慎，说话字斟句酌，堪称女性的楷模，并且只对瓷器店老板的儿子、十七八岁的拉米罗感兴趣。要是没有内乌扎太太的话，小伙子肯定无人可谈，因为别的年轻人都去围着马里尔达，请她跳桑巴、华尔兹、探戈和阿根廷民间舞，而他最热衷的话题却是钓鱼：“有一次，我钓到条红鱼，足有五公斤重!”
“啊!”内乌扎太太重重地惊叹一声，“五公斤?好大的鱼呀!你还钓到过什么?”该给勇敢的钓鱼人起个什么名字呢?“鳕鱼肝油”就很好听!内乌扎太太的眼睛里闪出一缕兴奋的光芒。
瓷器店老板带着夫人和儿子应邀前来，在门口遇见了“鲜花天堂”殡仪馆的维瓦尔多先生。他们一起去向男女主人道贺。回到男人们所在的客厅，布宜诺斯艾利斯人贝尔纳博以坦率得几乎缺乏教养的口气品评起弗洛尔太太高雅的打扮来，说她的穿着让所有在场的女人“嫉妒得要死”，连米尔蒂尼奥也羡慕不已。这位神经质的男人正在雅西太太家充当用人的角色——干得非常出色，今天临时来帮助弗洛尔太太张罗这次聚会。
“金钱能让女人漂亮起来……”埃克托尔·贝尔纳博说，“你看，弗洛尔太太多美丽，多高雅……”

维瓦尔多先生把手搭在阿根廷人的胳膊上：并非金钱才能让女人变得漂亮，贝尔纳博先生，而是着意打扮、安逸的心境和幸福的生活。她生活平静、快乐，所以那双眼睛才如此迷人，丰满的臀部才如此中看。

多嘴多舌的女邻居们唯一的兴趣就是谈论弗洛尔太太的生活，并且说得有声有色，活灵活现。对她们来说，没有比品评她的两个丈夫、两种生活更开心的事了。一旦谈起这个题目，她们都兴致勃勃，顾不上去听隔壁房间让男人们（还有像玛丽娅·安托尼娅那般不要脸的女人）哄堂大笑的肉麻的故事，连诺尔玛太太、玛丽娅·多·卡尔莫太太、阿梅莉娅太太也不再请马里尔达演唱古老的桑巴歌曲，以唤起对往日的怀念，甚至年轻小伙子们（他们个个对马里尔达表衷情）也不再围着姑娘团团转。一句话，没有比谈论弗洛尔太太和她的两个丈夫更好的消遣了。亲爱的女友们，请注意，她头一次结婚后的生活简直是人间地狱!
