吉吉突然惊醒过来。他感觉睡了几个小时，可是一看手表，才过去五分钟，只是打个小盹的时间而已。
他四仰八叉地躺着，感觉自己很多年都没有这样做了。虽然吉吉很清醒，但他还是翻了个身，想再睡一会儿。他休息得很充分，完全可以马上去做手头的事情。天空依然那么明亮，太阳有点晃眼。他想在四周转转。老家从来没有这样的好天气。或许也有，但人们的神经绷得太紧了，没法去享受。晒太阳是奢侈的行为，要做的事情太多了：晒干草，刷房子，从超市回来的路上快速游个泳。
吉吉脱下外衣，搭在肩上，往镇子里走去。他初见这个世界的时候，感觉跟他自己的世界差不多。现在仔细一看，发现还是有很大区别。首先，这里房子很少，而且看上去一点也不像房子。它们有着不规则的、生物体一样的外观，有的像是从大块岩石中凿出来的，有的像是从地壳的温和运动中拱出来的。镇子里看不到一个人影，所有的房门都是关着的，只在一家门前看到一只蹲在台阶上的小黄猫。然而，有很多奇怪的证据表明，这里确实有人。

在经过第一个篱笆时，吉吉并没有特别去留意。他家的篱笆上常常挂着衣服什么的，因此他不觉得篱笆上挂袜子有什么奇怪。但绕过一个弯后，又看到三只袜子躺在草丛边上，还有一只挂在几米外的树枝上，他开始觉得有点不同寻常了。
比起另一个肯瓦拉，这里的树林更茂密，里面的鸟儿也更多。这里也有田地，但边界参差不齐；还有，这里的墙是倒塌的，篱笆是稀疏的。他看到了几头牛和几匹马，个个膘肥体壮，皮毛光滑，神态悠闲。这些动物都在四处溜达，看得出来，它们过得很快活。除了这些牛和马，没有一点农耕的迹象。没有拖拉机，没有黑草捆，没有耕地的人。
人们都去哪里了？住在奇那昂格的是什么人？仙人吗？矮妖精[矮妖精，爱尔兰民间传说中的一种精灵，能指点宝藏。]吗？神灵吗？他打了个寒战，有点害怕，但并不恐惧。阳光还是那么温暖明亮，袜子一只又一只，大概每一百米就能碰到袜子，这里一只，那里两三只。有绣着卡通人物或泰迪熊图案的婴儿袜，还有不同颜色不同质地的儿童袜和成人袜。这些袜子图案丰富，有菱形袜、格子袜和圆点袜；质地多样，有羊毛袜、棉袜和尼龙袜。它们在阳光下分外醒目，诡异的是，它们都不成对。不知道袜子的主人是谁，不管是谁，都挺恐怖的。
从地宫出口走到镇子，用了至少半个小时。吉吉在小镇的大路上停下来，看了看表，上面显示的时间仍然是五点三十五分。他摇了摇手表，把耳朵凑上去听了听。沉默，嘀嗒一下，又是沉默。他把手表上面的按钮逐个按了一遍，试验了所有的时区，把设置时间和闹钟的小按钮拉进来推出去，想弄明白这表到底怎么了，可惜一切努力都是徒劳。他可以看到秒针在走，但走得慢得出奇，踉踉跄跄往前一步，停下来，接着又往前一步。这要是以前，吉吉肯定已经非常不耐烦了，但现在他觉得无所谓。手表停了又有什么关系呢？难道有什么要紧的事吗？
吉吉继续向前走，终于走到了小镇的边上，或者说他记忆中那个小镇的边上。这里当然是肯瓦拉，但好像又不是。麦克马洪加油站变成了两个漆着黄色和蓝色的金属水泵。对面是高高的石墙，一排挺拔的大树倚墙而立，这个是一样的，但后面本应是教堂的地方，耸立着一块巨大的灰色岩石，岩壁上刻着圆形和螺旋形的花纹，裂缝间生长着低矮的灌木和蕨类植物。也许这块石头里供奉着什么圣人或圣物，但吉吉懒得去研究，他没有逗留，径直朝镇子里走去。
吉吉在镇子里面穿行，街道相同，方向相同，目力所及的拐角和路口也是一样的，但这里都是石子路，不像他们那边是平坦的大路。道路两旁的房子和他前面见过的差不多。这些房子以各种奇怪的角度靠在一起，没有任何两所房子是对齐的，但不知为何，这些随意的排列反而让人觉得轻松舒适。吉吉留神观察，发现所有的房子都是空的。人们都去哪里了呢？
吉吉凝神细听，没有风。他穿过与大街交叉的小巷，瞥见了大海，但是他听不到大海的声音。海面像玻璃一样纹丝不动，没有气流，也没有一点浪花。但他隐隐约约听到了一点声音，是音乐，微弱的音乐声从街头飘向他身边。
他循着音乐的声音向前走。突然，他看见墙上有个影子在移动，原来是一只体型巨大的灰狗，之前它躺在地上，吉吉没有注意到，这会儿它站起来，正对着吉吉。吉吉不想惹它，就走到街道的另一头，没想到大灰狗也从墙边走过来，远远地挡住了他的去路。虽然距离很远，但吉吉看得出来，这个东西的状况很悲惨。它只能用三条腿走路，有一条后腿从肘关节处断了，拖在后面。吉吉打了个哆嗦。眼前的景象实在吓人，原来奇那昂格并非乐土一片，他开始怀疑，前面还会有什么恐怖的事情等着他。
他在大街中间停下来，观察着这只大灰狗，它长着粗硬的毛发和尖长的嘴巴，外形像一只爱尔兰狼狗，但是比吉吉见过的更庞大更笨重。大灰狗朝吉吉走过来，吉吉盯着它，做好了跑的架势。但这只狗没有一点挑衅的意思，它举止温驯，甚至有点低声下气。吉吉站在原地不动，大灰狗走到他跟前，嗅着他的手。吉吉伸出手，抚摸着它的头。
当吉吉弯腰看到灰狗的伤口时，不由得倒吸了一口凉气。伤口又深又重，十分恐怖。小腿勉强挂在皮肤和肌腱上，大腿与小腿之间的骨头裸露在外，一滴血掉到了尘土中。
“可怜的家伙。”吉吉说，“你到底怎么啦？”
灰狗似乎听懂了吉吉的话，突然竖起耳朵，扭头看着大街。一头棕色的山羊朝他们飞奔而来，后面紧跟着一个高大魁梧的大胡子男人。
“拦住它！”大胡子男人冲吉吉喊道。
吉吉张开双臂挡住了山羊的去路，山羊往左边一躲，但吉吉对山羊的习惯了如指掌，早就料到了它的动向，又把它拦住了。山羊观察了下形势，反身从后面追捕者的腋下冲了过去。
“好家伙，”大胡子男人抓住了它的一只角，“跟横冲直撞的马车一样，太厉害了！”
山羊发出哀怨的叫声，拼命挣扎，但是大胡子紧紧抓住它的角，不给它溜走的机会。
“去下面的码头吧。”他冲吉吉说道，“大家都在那里。”
“我刚才看到了这只狗。”吉吉说。
“哦，很好。”男人说，“它叫皮皮。”
“它的伤势很严重。”吉吉说。
“大概是打架弄的吧。”那人说，“可怜的老皮。”
男人拖着那只还在挣扎的山羊，向山下走去。
“我们不能丢下这只狗。”吉吉说。
“不用管它。”男人说，“它八成会跟咱们一起走的。”
