优秀是卓越的大敌。
这就是为什么鲜有优秀者实现卓越的主要原因。
我们没有卓越的学校，主要是因为我们有优秀的学校。我们没有卓越的政府，大抵是因为我们有优秀的政府。很少有人能过上美满的生活，基本原因是过上好生活很容易。绝大多数公司始终未能成为卓越的公司，全是因为它们绝大多数都是优秀的公司——而这正是它们的主要问题。
1996年，这一想法在我头脑中已经变得相当清晰明确。当时，我正与思想界的一群领袖一道进餐，讨论组织业绩问题。麦肯锡公司旧金山办事处的总经理比尔· 米汉探过身来，漫不经心地向我吐露：“喂，吉姆，我们都很喜欢《基业长青》这本书。你和另一位作者在调研和著书方面都干得非常出色。但遗憾的是，这本书毫无用处。”
我很好奇，请他解释一下。
