《我在通用汽车的岁月：斯隆自传》分为两大部分。第一部分是对通用汽车发展主线整体而连续的描述，包括公司在组织、财务和产品等领域基本管理理念的起源和发展。第二部分由若干个独立的章节组成，分别讲述设计、分销、海外业务、战争及国防产品、激励、公司部门结构及其他内容。尽管如此，我仍然无法做到面面俱到。对于我而言，完整地回顾通用汽车这段超过半个世纪的历史几乎是一件不可能完成的任务。我只是从我个人经历的角度出发选择了一些故事——我认为所有的人都会这样做的——来讲述，并且做好了接受人们评判的准备。
