故事不复杂，然而乔治·桑以充满诗意和新追求的文笔给其创作注入了迷人的魔力。在序言中，作者一再宣称，她要远离死亡等宏大主题，着力写朴实中的美。从简单的情节中，作者挖掘出男女主人公高尚、正直、善良的美德。男女主人公一贫一富，然而在爱情的感召下，经济和年龄上的差别一一消失。在魔沼边度过的一夜使两人的感情沟通了，内心得以融合。宁谧、神秘而独特的景色，为男女主人公的爱情经历增添了浓郁的浪漫色彩。
小说中的几个次要人物写得也很成功，寥寥数笔，栩栩如生，神情毕肖，但见讲求实际且正直善良的莫里斯老爹、喜爱虚荣的风骚寡妇、庸俗世故的莱奥纳。小皮埃尔是最重要的配角，他的活泼、顽皮避免了男女主人公恋爱场面的单调，增加了生活情趣。大人们难以启齿的心语，托与童言，显得自然贴切，美而化之，不留痕迹。乔治·桑追求“理想真，实”。在她的笔下，景色与人物皆被理想化，现实之丑给剥离了。小玛丽被雇主调戏的一幕，作者未直表，而是通过小皮埃尔之口转叙的，如此着墨，抽去了现实生活的狰狞与丑恶，表现了浪漫主义的创作特色。作品中细腻的描绘，清丽流畅的文字，委婉亲切的风格，都具有强烈的感染力。
末尾附录的风俗描写应该说有些冗长，比例失调.那是作者后加的。作者的用意是宣扬地方色彩，凸出粗犷隽永的农村风味，添加历史资料价值。
乔治·桑（1804-1876）是法国著名女小说家，一生著作卷帙浩繁。她的父亲是拿破仑时期的军官。她4岁丧父后，由祖母扶养，在农村长大，13岁进修道院，18岁嫁给杜德望男爵。男爵生活浪荡，而乔治·桑却又具有独立不羁的性格，因此，1831年她带着一子一女，毅然来到巴黎独自谋生，随即走上文学创作道路。《安蒂亚娜》是她第一部单独署名的小说，一举成名，从此一发而不可收。乔治·桑是一位多产作家，她一生写了100卷以上的文艺作品、20卷的回忆录《我的一生》以及大量书简和政论文章。她的小说创作大致可分四阶段：早期作品称为激情小说，亦称“妇女问题”小说，代表作有《安蒂亚娜》（1832）、《华伦蒂娜》（1832）、《莱莉亚》（1833）等，以妇女争取爱情婚姻自由、求得自身解放为主题，描写爱情上不幸的女性，她们对生活感到失望，不懈地追求独立与自由，作品字里行间充满了青春的热情与反抗的意志。第二阶段作品为空想社会主义小说，代表作有《木工小史》（1840）、《康素爱萝》（1843）、《安吉堡的磨工》（1845）等。在这些作品里，她着力揭露了当时社会的罪恶，抨击资本主义的财产和婚姻制度，进而提出空想社会主义的理想。第三阶段作品为田园小说，代表作有《魔沼》（1846）、《弃儿弗朗索瓦》（1848）和《小法岱特》（1849）。1839年，乔治·桑回到故乡诺昂，她始终关注着农民，关注身边的一草一木。她的田园小说以抒情见长，善于描绘大自然绮丽的风光，渲染农村的温静气氛，具有浓郁的浪漫色彩，揭开了乡土气息的故事篇。乔治·桑可谓法国第一位乡土作家。田园小说中的主角大多为农民，而且都被理想化了，有时乃至过了头。这正是乔治·桑的诗学追求。作者后来解释说：“他们如同我描绘的那样出现在我面前。也许因为我在现实生活中遇见过太多的心地善良的人，所以我相信正直，友谊和无私……我笔下诚实和纯洁的人物并不是抽象的概念……”在田园小说中，作者找到了能尽现自己才能的表达法。乔治·桑属于最早反映工人和农民生活的欧洲作家之一。第四阶段作品为传奇小说，代表作有《金色树林的美男子》（1858）。
