凡是关于半人半神的英雄业绩的神话，都可以归入英雄神话中。而《中国民俗文化丛书：创世神话》则主要包括天地的开辟、日月星辰等天文现象的来源人类的诞生、各个族群的来源、以及各种文化事项的产生。“创世”，意味着某些东西第一次被神性的创造者创造出来。从某种意义上说，“创世”即等同于 “起源”。
因此，一切讲述事物起源的神话，都可以归入创世神话中。创世神话正是《中国民俗文化丛书：创世神话》所要介绍的内容。创世神话内容广泛，从天地宇宙的开辟到草木昆虫的起源，都被包含其中，在神话中占有极为重要的地位。

神造型
神话是描写神和神性的一种叙述，在各种类型神话中，直接关乎神力的常常是最为广泛的类型。在中国，这种极富创造性的大神，不像西方造物主那样高高在上，严格区分于人类，引发人们的敬畏感；相反，在各种神话中，他们辛勤地造物，就像日常劳作那样创造出世界万物，非常的朴实，无比贴近于普通人民的生活方式。例如，畲族神话中，创世大神高辛氏用松枝编成了一个圆球，点着了火挂在天上，于是便产生了太阳；用柳条编成一个圆球，点着了火挂在天上，于是便产生了月亮。大神用最普通的材料，以最普通的方式，却创造了最为不凡的物体。
在神造型日月起源神话中，苗族神话《开天辟地歌》所描写的制作规模最大，制作过程最长，制作细节也叙述得最为清晰。作品中有“铸日造月”一节，总共六百多行，讲述造日月与射日月两大主题。“造日月”的整个过程，文中有十分出色的描写。“宝公和雄公”、“且公和当公”四位巨人负责制造日月。他们选择了一个远离山寨、“到处是石槽”的地方来完成这项壮举。“那个大水圈，又圆又好看。我们照水圈，铸造金太阳；我们照水圈，铸造银月亮”，四位巨人对于自己的创造工作充满了欣喜。他们用“九岭当炉子，九冲当风箱，岩包当打锤，汕头当砧磴”。巨人们吃了“九条牯牛，吞了九槽粑粑”，“一跳九丈高，拿把大锤子，举齐杉树梢，猛地打下来，金银满地跑”，结果造出“日月十二对”，“个个像山包，大地一片红，照亮九重霄”。在创世神话中，用如此巨大的篇幅来描写日月的起源，这是颇为罕见的。文本不仅描写了创造的过程，而且各个细节都带上了较多的修饰性成分，增添了许多的文学性。
