一个叫尼尔斯的小男孩，生性粗野，顽皮透顶，特别喜欢虐待小动物，人们都拿他没有办法。有一天，尼尔斯遇到了小精灵，因为捉弄小精灵而受到了惩罚，被小精灵变成了拇指般大的小人儿。这样一来，过去那些被尼尔斯虐待过的小动物，如鸡、鹅、猫等都不再怕他，有时还想教训他，有的动物甚至想向他报仇。，尼尔斯为了逃避动物们的追逐，爬到了家鹅莫顿的身上。没想到家鹅竞神奇地飞上天，和大雁们一起旅行。于是，尼尔斯开始了在瑞典漫长而又危险的骑鹅旅行。
在旅行中，尼尔斯了解了人和动物的习性，听到了许多民间传说，还参加了一些非常重要的活动。在长达八个月的骑鹅旅行中，尼尔斯逐渐认识到了什么是善，什么是恶，明白了做人的道理。最终，他由一个生性粗野、人见人恶的坏小子，变成了一个勤劳勇敢、诚实守信、聪明善良、人见人夸的好少年。

Book Abstract

尼尔斯马上追赶过去，想要从“狗”嘴里夺回那只大雁。他听到雄鹅在他身后高声叫道：“当心啊，大拇指儿！当心啊，大拇指儿！”可是，尼尔斯觉得对付一只小狗哪用得着害怕，所以一往无前地冲过去。
尽管是黑夜，尼尔斯仍然能清楚地看到冰面上的裂缝和窟窿，并且放大胆子跳过去。原来，他现在有了一双小精灵的夜视眼，所以他在黑暗里也看得见东西。
狐狸斯密尔从浮冰与陆地相连接的地方登上了岸，正当他费劲地顺着湖堤的斜坡往上奔跑时，尼尔斯朝他大喊起来：“把大雁放下，你这个坏蛋！”
斯密尔不知道喊叫的那个人是谁，也顾不得回头向后看，只是拼命向前奔跑。
狐狸跑进了一片树林里，尼尔斯在后面紧迫不舍，根本都不想会碰到什么危险。他一心只想着昨天晚上大雁们是怎么奚落他的，他要向他们显示一下：一个人不管他身体怎么小，毕竟比别的生物更有灵性。‘他一遍又一遍地朝那条“狗”喊叫，要他把叼走的大雁放下来。“你到底是一条什么样的狗，居然不要脸地偷了一只大雁！？他叫喊说，“马上把她放下，否则你等着瞧，要挨一顿怎样的痛打！马上把她放下，否则我要向你的主人告状，叫他轻饶不了你！”
当狐狸斯密尔听到自己被误认为是一条怕挨打的狗时，觉得十分可笑，几乎连嘴里叼着的那只雁也差点儿掉出来。因为他从没有听过这么荒唐的话。尼尔斯跑得那么快，终于追上了斯密尔，用手一把抓住了他的尾巴。“现在我把大雁从你嘴里抢下来！”他大喊道，并且用尽力气攥住狐狸的尾巴。但是他没有那么大的力气，拖拽不住斯密尔。狐狸拖着他往前跑，树林里的枯叶纷纷扬扬地飘落在他的身边。这时，斯密尔好像明白过来，原来追上来的人没有什么危险。他停下身来，把大雁撂到地上，用前爪按住她，免得她得空逃走。然后，他低下头去寻找大雁的咽喉，想要一口咬死她。可他转念一想，还不如先逗逗那个小人儿再说。“你快滚开，跑回去向主人哭哭啼啼吧！我现在可要咬死这只大雁啦！”他冷笑着说道。
尼尔斯看清楚自己追赶的“狗”长着很尖很尖的鼻子，吼声嘶哑而野蛮，心头猛然一惊。可这家伙那么贬低他，他气得要命，连害怕都顾不上了。他攥紧了狐狸尾巴，用脚蹬住一棵山毛榉树的树根。正当狐狸张开大嘴朝大雁咽喉咬下去的时候，他使出浑身力气猛地一拽，斯密尔不曾提防，被他拖得往后倒退了两三步。这样，大雁就抽空脱了身，她吃力地拍动翅膀腾空而起。她的一个翅膀已经受伤，几乎不能再用，加上在这漆黑的树林里她什么也看不见，就像一个瞎子那样无能为力，所以她帮不上尼尔斯什么忙，只好从枝丫的空隙中钻出去，回到湖面上。
可是斯密尔却恶狠狠地朝尼尔斯直扑过去。“我吃不到那一个，就要抓到这一个。”他吼叫道，从声音里听得出来他是多么愤怒。
“哼，你休想！”尼尔斯说道。他救出了大雁心里非常高兴。他一直死死地攥住狐狸尾巴，当狐狸转过头来想抓住他的时候，他就抓着尾巴闪到另一边。
尼尔斯起初为自己这么顺利地对付过来而非常开心，他哈哈大笑而且逗弄着狐狸。可是，斯密尔像所有善于追捕的老猎手一般非常有耐力，时间一长，尼尔斯不禁害怕起来，担心这样下去迟早要被狐狸抓住。
就在这时，他一眼瞅见了一株小山毛榉树，它细得像根长竿，笔直穿过树林里纠缠在一起的枝条伸向天空。他忽然放手松开了狐狸尾巴，一纵身爬到那棵树上。而斯密尔急于要抓住他，仍旧跟着自己的尾巴继续兜圈子兜了很长时间。
“快别再兜圈子了。”尼尔斯说道。
斯密尔觉得要是自己连这么一个小人儿都制伏不了，那就太丢脸了。于是就趴在树下等着机会。
