惜珍，本名朱惜珍，作家。因为迷恋文字，大学选择的是中文专业，做过记者、编辑。这个喝着黄浦江水长大的女作家，深爱上海这座城市。惜珍的写作始于20世纪90年代初，她早期的写作以小说为主，其代表作有《不和谐的和弦》、《长亭短亭》、《不说也罢》、《寻找感觉》、《我不再认识你》、《拒绝浪漫》、《迷失在丽娃河畔》等。从2003年开始，惜珍的目光转向上海的城市文化，开始了上海历史与人文的非虚构写作，先后著有《海上学人——一蓑烟雨任平生》、《上海的马路》、《品味老字号》、《永不飘散的风情——上海的历史文化风貌区》、《花园洋房的下午茶——上海的保护建筑》、《梧桐深处的别恋——上海的经典园林》、《上海老板》、《在上海寻找上海》、《走进草根艺人》等专著。

马路是城市的经脉，要了解一个城市，最便捷的方式就是到它的马路上去走一走。

2007年6月，上海中心城区内144条道路和街巷被列为风貌保护道路，其中64条风貌保护道路为永不拓宽的道路。这64条马路将作为城市历史、文化的传承和象征，给以原汁原味的整体保护；同时，严格控制原有道路的宽度，并加强对沿线建筑、市容、绿化及环境的管理。这意味着今后不会为了拓宽道路而拆掉被保护的老建筑，上海旧区的马路和马路景观将得到永久性的保护。

上海的马路作为城市最基本的元素，不少依旧保留着东、西方两种文化碰撞的特殊符号，镶嵌着东、西方两种文明互相包容的印迹。64条永不拓宽的马路便是其中的典型。这些马路是建筑文化在城市发展中的演绎，和上海城市的特点密切相连。首先是多元性。上海处于中、西文化碰撞交汇的中心，形成了多元文化兼容并蓄的态势，体现在建筑风格上，同样也是神态各异，多姿多彩。其次是商业性。商业在城市中的重要地位决定了城市格局中的商业特点，与上海日益发达的商业活动相适应，各种功能、各类风格的马路和建筑应运而生，反映在建筑形态上又有一种追求时尚、讲究实用的特征。因此，这些永不拓宽的马路是展示上海城市发展脉络、延续城市文化的物质载体，它们集中体现了上海城市的精华和神韵，浓缩了上海的历史印象。

这些年来，我到国外一些城市旅行，不管是在美国，在新加坡，还是在俄罗斯，我发现自己对看到的那些异国建筑都有似曾相识之感，它们时时让我想起上海。难怪有人说，在上海可以做一次不出边境的出国游。20世纪初上海南京路就号称是“最世界主义的马路”。老上海留下了许多美轮美奂的异域风格的建筑，几乎没有一个城市能像上海那样拥有全世界各国风格的建筑，这是海纳百川的上海的城市特质。建筑是城市的灵魂与历史的写照，当我漫步在纽约的第五大道上，感觉这里竟然与上海的外滩如此相像，到处是鳞次栉比的摩天大楼，人就像走在峡谷中一样。但纽约怎么能和外滩比呢？中山东一路毗邻黄浦江，这条上海的母亲河让生硬的建筑变得柔和了许多，也让马路有了透气的空间，这是上海特殊的历史与人文赋予马路的灵魂与气质。

64条永不拓宽的马路分布在上海的各个区内，以徐汇区为最多，其次是黄浦区，还有一些是跨区的。我把这64条马路按其所在区域分为3本来写。《永不拓宽的上海马路（一）》中涉及的马路主要分布在黄浦区和虹口区，共20条马路，其中黄浦区15条，虹口区5条。《永不拓宽的上海马路（二）》中的马路主要位于徐汇区、静安区和长宁区，共24条马路。其中徐汇区21条马路，静安区1条马路，长宁区两条马路。《永不拓宽的上海马路（三）》主要为跨区的马路，共20条马路。这三本书既各自独立又互相关联，合在一起就是完整的上海64条永不拓宽的马路。因我探寻这64条一类风貌保护道路的时间跨度较大，文中部分建筑入驻单位、商家等相关信息和写作对象的现状可能有所变动，在此一并说明。
