一九五八年
这一年的二月四日，圭吾出生于大阪市生野区。我家里经营着一个生意萧条、卖钟表眼镜贵金属等饰物的小店。我是姐弟三人中最小的一个。我的户籍所在地写的是“东区玉造”，那是父亲的出生地，我自己没有在那里住过。父亲以“这个地方说起来比较好听”为由，把我的户籍地安到了这里。结果，在之后很多年里，想弄个户籍复印件都要大费周章。而比我年长五岁的大姐却把这事灵活地运用了起来，每当别人问她老家在哪里的时候，她总是给出“我的户籍在东区”这样一个莫名其妙的答案。
圭吾对生野区这个生我养我的城市怀有深厚感情，不过，就像我在其他文章里提到过的那样，这个地方也有不少问题。家里的旧相册中收藏着一张圭吾出生时光屁股的照片，我一直搞不懂为什么男孩儿出生的时候都要照这么一张，这个疑问一直没人给我解答。还有，“东野”这个姓氏本来读作“TOUNO”，但是父亲非要把读音改成“HIGASINO”，无论是按照五十音图的顺序，还是按照伊吕波的顺序，“HIGASINO”都比“TOUNO”排得靠后，似乎这就是父亲的理由。这大概与他曾经在军队服役过的经历有关吧。顺便说一句，父亲曾是个军曹。
一九五九年
这一年的某日，圭吾在有“日本人罗圈腿元凶”之称的走步器里学走路，结果一不小心从几十厘米的高处掉了下来，摔伤了脸蛋。右侧脸颊的伤疤三年多都没有消退，所以在最可爱的那几年里连一张照片都没有留下。不过，那个疤现在已经没有了，有时摸摸颧骨，还能隐隐感觉到皮肉上有一道裂痕。另外，我的鼻梁也被摔歪了，这一点让我很是在意。
一九六二年
这一年的某日，圭吾第一次去了离家一公里左右的一个公园，结果在那里迷了路。三个初中女生发现了哭泣的我，并把我带到了派出所。结果，左等右等也不见父母提出寻人申请，所以又把我移交给辖区地的布施警察局。实际上，当时圭吾的父母正在看相扑比赛转播，看得入了迷，根本就不知道儿子丢了。当父母专注于大鹏力士的比赛分组时，圭吾正在布施警察局一遍一遍念叨着“东野、大成市场”这几个字。大成市场就在我家附近，警局的人
在市场里播放了寻人广播，但母亲当然没有听见——她正坐在电视机前看比赛呢。相扑结束后，她到市场买东西时，邻居告诉她“刚才广播里在找你呢”，她这才意识到孩子不见了。父亲赶到布施警察局的时候已经晚上八点多了，他一去就被警察骂了个狗血淋头——圭吾心中暗喜。据说，当时我正在吃女警察给的香蕉。顺便提一句，一九九九年出版的《白夜行》开篇提到了我曾经走失的那个公园。
一九六四年
这一年的四月某日，圭吾进入大阪市立小路小学读书。公立学校人人都能上，不过也要参加一个所谓的智力测验，就是让小朋友照着范本画出一样的图形之类的。让我画的是一个等腰三角形。不过，为什么这些乱七八糟的事我都会记得啊！就算当时是大脑发育的关键期吧，那也应该多记些有用的事才对。
应该就在这一年，东京举办了奥运会。阿贝贝在马路上奔跑的英姿给圭吾留下了深刻印象，但是我不记得是看的是直播，还是市川崑导演拍的纪录片电影了。那个电影我看过两次，这是我记忆中看过的第一部电影。话说回来，小学的伙食实在太差劲了。开学典礼后，给家长和学生准备的伙食还算不错，但是从第二天开始，伙食就难吃得要命。关于学校伙食的悲惨回忆实在不胜枚举。欲知详情，请阅读《那时我们是傻瓜》一书。
一九六五年
这一年的某一天，“伙食蚯蚓”事件爆发，这件事也详细记录在《那时我们是傻瓜》一书中。别嫌烦，圭吾对小学伙食的怨念实在太深了。小学二年级的时候，我的成绩册上全是三分，而在那个时代，全是五分才是优秀生。大姐和二姐总能得到优秀生的奖章，所以学校的老师也对东野家的老三十分看好，而且又是男孩子，备受期待大概也是理所应当的事。然而，圭吾全科都是三分，语文、算数、理科、社会、体育、音乐，甚至是吃饭，全都是三分。三分也就等同于“一般”，就是说在整个班级里，既非最好也非最差，而是属于“最普通”这个等级。辜负了老师的期待，真是对不住了。每天都沐浴在老师失望而又悲哀的目光中，我心里真不是滋味。
一九六六年
这一年的某一天，圭吾看到了《奥特Q》。其实此前我也看过怪兽，但是第一次在自家客厅看到也可以当成值得纪念的事件吧。如果我没看到这个节目的话，那我也就不会看到《奥特曼》和《赛文奥特曼》，我也就不会在《小说SUBARU》上发表题为“怪兽少年的逆袭”的随笔，这篇随笔也就不能发展成为后来的《那时我们是傻瓜》这本书，也就不会给东野家丢人现眼了。所以说，到底是哪样更好呢？
一九六八年
这一年的九月某日，不知为什么，圭吾被推举为儿童会（初中和高中叫学生会）副会长的候选人。当时，五年级有五个班，每班选出一名候选人。能在这么多人里被推选出来，就说明你很有领袖风范嘛——大概很多人出于好意会这样解释，但是圭吾确实不是这块料。我就是“最普通”的那号人，就是典型的一般人。而且，我连班长都没当过，充其量也就当过保健委员和园艺委员之类的（这都是什么玩意儿啊）。所以，这次为什么非要选我当儿童会副会长候选人呢？理由只有一个，就是为了好玩。大家都觉得“把圭吾同学选为候选人一定会很好玩”。候选人必须要在全校学生面前演讲，让圭吾同学上台演讲会怎样呢？大家都对此很感兴趣，说不定这也是一种变相的欺凌呢。但是我却毫不在意，开始专心准备演讲。另外，圭吾把演讲和表演搞混了，我觉得表演的话必须得让观众喜欢才行，于是就准备了一份笑料满满的讲稿。结果，这一计划居然大获成功，我的演讲备受好评。不仅如此，我还以绝对的优势当选了。没错，圭吾是副会长了。连我父母都吃惊地说：“这也太不可思议了吧！”不过，圭吾意气风发地当选之后，什么事也没干，就在会长旁边傻站了半年。
顺便一提，这一年发生了三亿日元事件。三亿日元，就是三○○○○○○○○日元。因为这个金额实在高到没有天理，所以圭吾并没觉得犯人是坏蛋，反而觉得他是了不起的大英雄。周围的大人们也夸那个犯人头脑机灵，也许这就是我开始关注智慧型犯罪的契机吧。
