回想起来，小时候的世界和现在很不一样：所有的大人都有一个他们所属的单位，每天朝九晚五地上班，几十年如一日，仿佛永远也不会改变。在那些工作日里，世界的很多地方好像都停止运转了：静悄悄的街巷，空无一人的公园，冷冷清清的百货公司……偶然在这时去那些地方，心里会感到很不安，好像自己违反了规则似的。那个时候的时间过得均匀、缓慢，世界笼罩在僵化的秩序之下，刻板而缺乏生趣。
是从什么时候开始，工作不再等同于朝九晚五地上班的呢？似乎很难找到那个节点。只是记得上个世纪末，SOHO这个词开始在中国流行。在随后的十几年里，自由职业者变得越来越多。很多年轻人选择不去上班，他们在家、在咖啡馆、在旅途中工作，按照自己的意愿分配时间。尽管仍旧会有父母的反对，同事的质疑，可是辞职已经不再是不可理喻的选择，很多时候，它甚至被视作是一种积极的人生态度——至少，你把生活的主动权握在了自己的手里。
上班，通常意味着在一个集体里工作。有上司，有同事，有规章制度。对于我们的父辈来说，这些都是天经地义的事，他们习惯了把自己安静地摆放在一个集体的某个位置上，跟着它一起运转，不管兴衰成败，都会觉得很安心。可是和他们比起来，年轻一代对集体远远没有那么强的归属感。所以，脱离集体也就不是多么艰难的选择。更何况，所换得的是他们最在乎的自由。某种意义上说，他们所感到的不自由，很大一部分正是来自于上司、同事和一成不变的规章制度。什么时间午饭，什么时间开会，几乎所有的事都要和别人保持一致，这本身就是一种束缚。而且，在狭小的格子间里，一举一动都在别人的注视下，没有任何隐私可言，并且为了维护正常、体面的形象，总是要花很多气力的。这样的一天过下来，就算没做什么工作，已经感到很疲倦。所以，不上班就能摆脱集体的制约。
对于那些从上幼儿园起，就开始感受到集体所带来的压力的年轻人来说，这真是极大的诱惑。
不上班的另一大好处，就是可以自由地分配时间。每个人的一天都是二十四小时，谁也不比谁多一分，谁也不比谁少一分，可是事实上它们并不是一样长的。在那些疲于奔命的时间里，人们忙得像一台机器，生活是真空的，那样的时间就像没有存在过一样。所以，也许只有那些真正属于自己的时间才是有意义的。不上班，也就不用再去挤地铁，抢出租车，不必在堵塞的高架桥上浪费生命，还可以自己决定什么时候吃饭，什么时候睡觉，在天气好的午后忽然来了兴致，也可以约朋友一起去喝下午茶，又或是在心情低落的时候把门一锁，去附近做一次短途旅行。身体和情绪如同潮汐和月亮，有着它们自己的节律。遵循这种节律，压力才能得到及时的释放，人们才能处在舒适的状态，才能拥有充沛的想象力，各种奇思妙想才会源源不断地产生。
当然，不上班未必总是好的。它可能会带来强烈的惰性，让人越来越懈怠，在无所事事中丧失了斗志和生趣。任何自由都不可能是无度的，不上班不代表失去对自我的要求和约束。恰恰相反，它需要你有更明确的目标和更强的约束力。如果能够去做自己喜欢做的事，相信这些约束也并不算什么。所以，不上班之后生活的成败，其实取决于能否找到一项自己认为有意思、有意义的工作。有这样一项工作的存在，不上班的日子才充实完整，也才更接近我们所憧憬的理想生活。
