《千古足音：追寻马可·波罗》：
话说威尼斯与热那亚刚才这段引子说得大家挺糊涂，怎么威尼斯人跑到热那亚监狱里口述关于中国的书？这就要从意大利的两个城邦国家说起。
话说一千年多前，欧罗巴南部，意大利北部，阿尔卑斯山脉和亚平宁山脉交汇处的两侧，有两个港口城市渐渐崛起。这两个城市好像是意大利半岛的两个守门人，东边的叫威尼斯，西边的叫热那亚。那时意大利经济文化在欧洲最发达，可是北方的游牧族老是入侵，这和中国的情况有点类似。在公元10世纪至公元15世纪之间，北方的日耳曼人每次入侵意大利，都要从这里切入，持续不断的侵略使得这两个城邦供养大批雇佣兵，于是这两个城市想尽办法挣钱，特别要发展海上贸易。在他们眼里，行业没有高低贵贱之分一只要能挣钱。这里一切向钱看，一切向海洋看。在他们的影响下，整个意大利半岛弥散着重利轻义的情绪，商人、手艺人和航海家而不是贵族和僧侣受到尊重。其实这也是历史的进步，这里的世俗文化最终促成文艺复兴的发生。商业利益是威尼斯和热那亚国家的第一利益。但是，一山不容二虎，亚平宁半岛容不下两个商业“大国”，于是商业利益转化成军事行动。为了垄断地中海贸易，这两个城市之间不断爆发海战。
威尼斯建造在亚得里亚海威尼斯湾的118个小岛屿上，177条水道构成了城市交通网，生活需要促使他们必须有发达的航运业。从一开始威尼斯就是一个商人的国家，其权力机构由总督、元老院及议会组成，这些人多数都是商人尤其是航运商出身。但是热那亚的崛起比威尼斯还要早。热那亚人很早就成立了航海学校、图书馆和海军，他们在和海对岸阿拉伯人的经商过程中学习到很多航海的知识。这两个城邦国家在当时的欧洲商业最发达，军队，特别是海军的装备也最先进。两个城邦打起海战来，在当时也是最为壮观。海上强国葡萄牙、西班牙、荷兰、英国的崛起都是后来的事。
“胜者为王”“只有第一，没有第二”，这两句市场竞争残酷无情的口号，用在威尼斯热那亚争霸上是再合适不过了。中世纪地中海有三个强大的城市共和国。热那亚的海军排行老二，与第一名威尼斯、第三名比萨并驾齐驱。热那亚共和国的舰队先打败了名列第三的比萨海军。进而挑战威尼斯的老大地位。一百年里，热那亚和威尼斯四次浴血战争中，热那亚屡战屡胜，威尼斯屡败屡战，最后热那亚人打到威尼斯家门口。有一次，热那亚击败了威尼斯舰队后，给被俘的威尼斯舰队司令带上镣铐、罚他赤身裸体地去当奴隶。坐在船的底层划桨。
1298年热那亚和威尼斯又爆发大海战，威尼斯海军照例全军覆灭，没有沉没的战舰被热那亚全部俘获。威尼斯舰队司令眼看一艘一艘战舰沉没，又急又愧，他也知道上一届海军司令被俘获的滋味，头撞战舰桅杆自杀，还真有点楚霸王乌江自刎的志气。威尼斯没有了舰队，只好屈辱地签订了城下之盟，约定两国共享亚得里亚海。
被俘获的威尼斯战船被一艘艘拉进热那亚港。垂头丧气的战俘中有一个人，气宇轩昂，一脸不在乎。
这人深目高鼻、身材伟岸、一脸大胡子、目光炯炯，声如洪钟、脸庞出奇地端正，一看就是见过大世面的人物。这人不是别人，就是后来震惊世界的马可·波罗。几万人的海战，几年的牢狱之灾，对此人都是小意思。正是“曾经沧海难为水，除却巫山不是云”。
马可·波罗自己说得好：“从上帝创造亚当直到今天，无论是异教徒还是萨拉逊人还是基督教徒，不论什么种族什么时代，从来没有任何一个人看过或者谈过在我的书中所描述的这么众多、如此伟大的事情。”马可·波罗怎么参加海战又成了俘虏呢？听我慢慢道来。1298年威尼斯和热那亚开战，两国舰队在地中海对峙。马可·波罗生性好事，这么大的乐子发生在家门口岂能不闻不问。没有冒险的人生是没有价值的人生。真正壮丽的人生在危险和安全的交汇处。马可·波罗永远在这危险与安全的交汇处徜徉。不过这次他在家门口的运气不如万里之外的远东。
马可·波罗率领自己出钱建造的战船参战。波罗家的战船是木制的，有帆还有桨，每边有桨一百多只，划桨的水手就有二百人。船员共计二百五十多人，包括五十个持机械弩的海军士兵、两个木匠、两个铁匠、两个侍役、一个厨子。
这艘战舰的名字也很特别，说起来让人感动，名叫“东方号”，由此可见马可·波罗对自己东方游历的怀念。马可·波罗想象自己是为东方而战，多半心想他是为他的第二祖国中国而战。其实威尼斯和热那亚是为了争夺地中海的商业利益而战，属于春秋无义战之类，和东方没有什么关系，威尼斯打败热那亚中国政府也不会通令嘉奖，更何况马可·波罗不知道他的亲爱的朋友和老板——大汗忽必烈——早已经过世了。但你不得不承认，马可。波罗既勇敢豪爽又浪漫念旧，驾驶自家战舰参战，战舰名叫“东方号”，结果战败当了战俘，到监狱还是讲中国故事。马可·波罗真是对中国热爱到了极点，是有史以来最好的中国形象大使。
