李政道（Tsung Dao Lee）：美籍华裔物理学家，1926年11月25日出生于中国上海，1957年，他31岁时与杨振宁一起，因发现弱作用中宇称不守恒而获得诺贝尔物理学奖。李政道和杨振宁是最早获诺贝尔奖的华人。两人在1962年分手。杨振宁拒绝谈论是什么原因使得他们的关系变得紧张。他说：“这是我生命中令我非常失望的一件事情。我要说，这是一个悲剧。”

“不知道。”毛泽东说：“有上海就有下海，不然，就不对称了。下海是一个镇子。”
毛泽东接着就对李政道说：“你提的培养人才的建议我是赞成的。但是，你的那个理论没有讲清楚。”李政道听到毛泽东赞成他的建议，心情顿时畅快了许多。听毛泽东说他道理没讲清楚，他先是一惊，但立刻感到这也有中肯的一面。看来毛泽东还没有看到他的《补充说明》。
毛泽东又幽默地自问自答说：“理论是从哪里来的呢？就是从应用科学来的，然后又指导应用科学。”李政道认为，这种说法自然是对的，这也就是那个哲学上的命题，即理论来自实践。可是问题在于，有人拿这个命题去贬低理论的重要性，甚至认为重视理论是错误的，是所谓“修正主义”。拓展开来，连培养基础科学人才都不对了。在毛泽东亲自发动的“文化大革命”的年代，这种认识被极端化，造成了对国家文化科技教育的极大破坏。李政道的建议正是针对这种情况提出的。周恩来接见时的情况说明，要恢复人们正确的认识有多么困难。这里面当然有毛泽东上面那些话的影响。毛泽东虽然说赞成李政道的建议，可是又说李政道没有把道理讲清楚。毛泽东所谓没讲清楚的仍然是那个老问题，即理论和实践的关系。毛泽东的阐述仍然明显地强调了实践对于理论的重要性或者说优先性。但不管怎样，眼前毛泽东既然表示赞成李政道的建议，那么事情就可以乘势做下去。于是李政道向毛泽东陈述了自己的建议。他提出的要重视基础科学和从年轻的人中间挑选，要参照培养芭蕾舞演员的办法去培养基础科学人才的建议，终于得到了毛泽东的首肯。在此之后，李政道的建议得以突破坚冰付诸实施。

Introduction

我和李教授算是同时代的人，又在物理学的一个领域内是同行，有幸在年轻时代起就不断追随李政道先生在各个时期所做的各项开拓性的工作。特别在粒子物理的领域内，政道教授绝对是“各领风骚”的先驱者，尤其是他和杨振宁教授合作研究的弱相互作用下宇称不守恒理论的发现。
1956年国庆前夕，张文裕教授、王承书教授、郭永怀教授、李佩教授乘海船由香港归来。我奉命到深圳的罗湖桥头欢迎他们四位回国服务。由于我的兴趣在粒子物理，而张文裕先生、王承书先生和李政道、杨振宁都是往来十分密切的朋友，所以，就自然而然地向我介绍了李政道和杨振宁所做的经典工作。而且，他们给了我一份由他们两位带回来的预印本《关于弱相互作用里的宇称是否守恒的问题》。
宇称，涉及左和右相对称的概念，一个物理体系处在左和右相对称的始态。发展或演化以后，竟然会出现左和右不相对称的末态。
