“哎哟，天啊，你还在这里等呀！记者招待会的地点已经变了，我们已在内阁大楼举行过了。很抱歉，非常抱歉未能通知你。不过，我可以肯定，总理将会单独与你会晤，以此来进行弥补……”
尼泊尔礼宾官身着宽松的白衣裤，头戴高高的白色帽，把我引向一簇刚刚来到拉那宫的人群旁。渐渐地，人群闪开了，从中显出了一个令人感到惊讶的瘦小而又虚弱的身躯—中华人民共和国总理周恩来。
真是一个令人难以捉摸的情形。按照原计划，周1960年对尼泊尔的这次访问将在他的下榻处会见来自世界各地的记者。他下榻在古老的拉那宫，距尼泊尔王国首都加德满都3英里开外。我到尼泊尔去的原因之一，就是为了采访来访的中国人。不巧的是，在他们访问的最后一天，我要替我的杂志干些其他事情，所以没接到记者招待会变更地点的通知。
因此，按照约定的午夜时间，我单独前往拉那宫去参加记者招待会，结果发现那里空空荡荡、寂静无人，只有两个持枪但却熟睡了的哨兵。我战战兢兢地从他们中间跨过去，谷仓般的大厅里见不到一个人，出现在眼前的只是布满地毯的烟蒂和鸡骨。没有中国的采访者，没有尼泊尔的官员。
而此时此刻，我却面对着62岁的中国总理。尽管是由于尼泊尔人的过错而不是周的过错使我失去了参加记者招待会的机会，但周却欣然接受了单独会见我以示补偿的建议。当时已过午夜许久，中国方面的随行人员已到各地访问了几个星期，预定第二天清晨黎明时分起飞回国。他们人人都感到疲倦了，然而周的随行人员中的十几名官员，其中包括外交部长陈毅，却站在那里等待着这个未被列入计划的会晤的结束，然后他们才能去睡觉并为他们的启程做准备。他们中的一些人眼睛盯着我，带着一种不露声色的愤懑感。

我的心情激动起来了。一年多来，我一直在设法进入中国，但却未获成功。
“欢迎你。”总理突然用学生式的英语说道，并扬起他的双臂做了个表示欢迎的姿势。
中国官员们互相看了看对方，好像在说，“终于结束了！”我激动地走出拉那宫，闯入了喜马拉雅山那寒冷的夜空之中。这简直是一场梦。周善于使事情看起来像梦一般，但却不大善于把这些梦变为现实。我后来给他写了几封信，但却从未收到过有关邀请方面的信函。只是过了数年，在蒙哥马利访问了中国之后，我才第一次来到中国访问。但是，周给我留下的第一印象却依然历历在目。他注意尽可能全面地满足我的要求，毫无傲气和任何架子。他的行为近乎卑微，但他的助手们对他的恭敬态度却反映了他所具有的政治权力的强烈影响力。

这种人最初是如何获得了改造自己的祖国并使之民主化的动力的呢？这是有关周恩来的第一个大问题；而他如何渐渐地选择了马克思主义作为这种改造的媒介则是第二个大问题；第三个大问题是为什么在半个多世纪的对中国共产党的领导过程中，他始终坚持使他人身居最高的位置，而自己却拒绝这种地位；第四个谜则是，他为什么继续支持自己过去的对手毛泽东并跟随其后参加狂热的、毁灭性的1958年“大跃进”及1966年的文化大革命。
与毛及其他中国共产党领导人相比，周显得更为开明，更加信任人民，对世界历史了解得更广泛，出访过更多的国家并会见过更多的访问者。但是，在这个面带笑容的领导人和颇具魅力的外交官形象之后，一个真正的周却有待于人们去进一步深刻认识。
