本译丛选择现代西方学者的思想史研究经典为译介对象。迄今为止，国内译介西方学术著作主要有两类：一是西方思想的经典著作，例如柏拉图的《理想国》和亚里士多德的《形而上学》等等；二是现代西方思想家诠释西方思想史的著作，例如黑格尔的《哲学史讲演录》和罗素的《西方哲学史》等等。然而，国内学术界对基于专业专精于学术富有思想底蕴的学者型的阐释性著作却甚少重视，缺乏译介。这就忽视了西方思想史研究的重要一维，也无益于西方思想史的真实呈现。西方学术界的实际情况却是相反：学者们更重视富有启发性的专业研究著作。这些著作本着思想的历史作历史的发微，使思想史的客观、绵延和更新的真实脉络得到呈现。本译丛希望弥补这一空缺，挑选富有学术内涵、可读性强、关联性广、思想空间宏阔的学者型研究经典，以呈献于中国学术界。
