《武士之心：李小龙的人生哲学》：

“那我就听不懂了。”罗恩把推杆放入高尔夫球袋，“功夫不是李小龙的专长吗？”
“没错，”李宗回答，“但是你今天在球场上的表现也可以叫做功夫。”
这个故事很好地诠释了东方和西方对武术看法的普遍差异。李宗对功夫一词的解释相当准确，这个解释从一个精通东方文化的人嘴里说出来，并不完全出人意料。同样不出人意料的是罗恩对功夫的理解，他认为功夫只是一种格斗形式。你看，我们西方人一直因为把功夫（李小龙是香港人，他偏向gungfu这个发音）的真正意义流氓化而感到愧疚。对于西方人来说，这个词跟空手道和跆拳道之类的亚洲格斗方法是同义词。但是，这根本不符合功夫最原始的中式含义。
根据准确的中国翻译，功夫的含义就是巨大的成就。有功夫的人就是非常精通自己技艺的人，而这个技艺可以是任何技艺。比如说，文章写得非常好的记者就可以说是有功夫之人，绘画技艺高超的画家也可以说是有功夫之人，以此类推，所有拥有不凡技艺的人都可以说是有功夫之人，从医药到骑马，从武术到高尔夫球，各行各业、各种消遣中都不乏有功夫之人。
按照今天的标准，对工作的完全掌握不仅可以体现功夫，还可以体现个人对自己的掌握。对自己的掌握——至少从中国人的角度来说——是一件积极的、值得个人去争取的事情。根据备受尊崇的中国传统，掌握功夫的人可以是一个重要的哲学家、一个有天赋的炼丹家、一个精通医术的医生、一个饱读诗书的学生或者一个知名的音乐家，他们通过这些身份展示了对自己的掌控。另外，一个掌握功夫的人在有需要的时候也会有能力保护自己和自己所爱的人。但是，把功夫看成是打架的能力就是对这个词大大的不公平了。
李小龙被很多人认为是功夫最原始、最纯粹的意义的代表人物。他在讨论功夫时喜欢讲一个叫做“三个剑客”的故事，这个寓言跟著名的日本剑圣宫本武藏有关，它微妙的象征意义给李小龙留下了深刻的印象，以至于他在香港给电视观众讲了这个故事，他甚至把它写进了他跟演员詹姆斯‘柯本和斯特林·西利芬特共同创作的《无音箫》的剧本的引言之中。根据李小龙的讲述，这个故事是这样的：

一些西方人会草率地认为，三个剑客突然对骚扰宫本武藏失去了兴趣，与大师用筷子夹住苍蝇的能力没有关系。但是事实并非如此，这三个剑客之所以离开，是因为他们意识到，这位大师用筷子抓苍蝇的动作就显示了他的技艺，而这个技艺就是最高功夫的体现，是大师完全掌握自己的体现，所以，他是一个需要避开的人物。他们的结论也强调了古老的中国信仰，那就是，任何完全掌控某种艺术的人在一举一动中都可以展现他气定神闲的品质。
