Book Abstract

1937年“七七事变”时，杨振宁已经在崇德中学读完高中一年级，放假回到清华园。这时杨振宁的母亲正怀着小儿子振复。考虑到大战在即，杨武之决定将妻子和儿女送到老家合肥，离开势若危卵的北平。他带着妻儿，沿途经过天津、南京和芜湖，回到了合肥的故居。杨武之也许是因为家中大小人员太多，也许是因为形势看得比较清楚，所以比一般教授更早地就将家人向南方疏散。浦薛凤在回忆录中写道：“佩玉……闻各家有纷纷南下者，不免惊惶，时[杨]武之、[沈]仲端、[浦]志清及[郑]桐荪先生等，都已携眷南下。”后来许多教职员工因为决心下得太晚而慌忙出逃，方佩服早有计划的人。
9月，杨振宁进了合肥庐州中学继续读高中二年级。庐州中学位于大书院，原来是省立第六中学，1934年改名为庐州中学，但一般人仍然习惯地称为六中。后来为逃避日本侵略军飞机的轰炸，庐州中学由合肥迁到合肥南边70多里处的三河镇，继续在那儿上课。杨振宁在庐州中学读了刚好一学期的书，但日后他并没有忘记这所中学。1992年6月18日，杨振宁曾回到母校（现合肥一中）访问，看望了当年的外语老师王道平先生，还为母校题词。在这短短的半年时间里，杨振宁也给他人留下了很深的印象。他的堂兄杨振声回忆说：“振宁对运动也很有兴趣，曾教我打墙球、玩玻璃球、斗蟋蟀等。‘七七事变’后，他们全家逃难合肥，我和振宁在庐州中学读了一个学期，又逃到三河镇。那里到处是河港、水田。记得振宁说，他要发明一种水上可以行走的脚踏车。因为他有广泛的兴趣，对什么事情都想了解，随时随地都在思索答案，所以对他来说，读书、做学问是一种乐趣。”
他的堂弟杨振怀回忆说：“振宁大哥随父母避战火从北平回到合肥。他从北平带来两个木箱，其中有许多化学试杯，经常拿出来表演给我们看，白水倒来倒去，一会儿变成红色，一会儿变成蓝色。还用放大镜来点燃纸张，自己制作氢气灌在球中飞上天等，我们看得都迷住了，像玩魔术似的。”
