E·B·怀特（E.B.White 1899–1985）二十世纪美国最杰出的随笔作家、评论家。“其文风冷峻清丽，辛辣幽默，自成一格”。生于纽约蒙特弗农，毕业于康奈尔大学。作为《纽约客》主要撰稿人，怀特一手奠定了影响深远的 “《纽约客》文风”——对世上的一切都充满关爱，保持着“面对复杂，保持欢喜”的态度。怀特的道德与他的文章一样山高水长。
任溶溶，1923年生于上海。著名儿童文学翻译家、作家。1945年毕业于上海大夏大学中国文学系。1949年后历任上海少儿社编辑部副主任，上海译文出版社副总编辑。他翻译了大量俄英意日等多种文字的外国儿童文学名著，同时从事儿童文学创作。译著《安徒生童话全集》《彼得·潘》《小飞人》等；著有童话集《“没头脑”和“不高兴”》、儿童诗集《小孩子懂大事情》等。曾获陈伯吹儿童文学奖杰出贡献奖、宋庆龄儿童文学奖特殊贡献奖、宋庆龄樟树奖、国际儿童读物联盟翻译奖等诸多奖项。

美国纽约有一位弗雷德里克·利特尔先生，他的第二个儿子一生下来，人人马上看到，这位小少爷比一只老鼠大不了多少。事实上，这个小宝宝不管从哪一方面看都活像一只老鼠。他只有两英寸左右高，长着老鼠的尖鼻子、老鼠的长尾巴、老鼠的八字须，而且有老鼠那种灵活、害羞的样子。没过多少天，他就不仅是样子像老鼠，连一举一动也像老鼠了——他头戴一顶灰帽子，手握一根小文明棍。利特尔先生和太太给他取了个名字叫斯图尔特，利特尔先生还用四个衣夹和一个香烟盒子给他做了张小床睡觉。
不像大多数小宝宝，斯图尔特生下来就会走路。一个星期，他已经能够爬着电灯拉绳上电灯了。利特尔太太马上看到，她原先准备好的婴儿衣服用不上了，于是动手给他做了一套蓝色呢子的漂亮小西装，上面有些个贴袋，让他用来放他的手绢、他的钱和他的钥匙。每天早晨斯图尔特穿衣服以前，利特尔太太走进他的房间，把他放在一个小天平上称一称体重，这把小天平实际上是用来称信的。斯图尔特一生下来，本可以花上三分邮票把他当第一类邮件寄走，但是他的爸爸妈妈舍不得寄走他，情愿把他留下来。到了一个月大，他的体重也只有三分之一盎司（一盎司是28.35克，这么算下来是10克不到），他的妈妈太担心了，于是请医生来看他。
医生看到斯图尔特很高兴，说一个美国人家生下一只小老鼠是非常非常少有的事。他给斯图尔特量体温，量下来是华氏98.6度，对于一只老鼠来说，这种体温是正常的。他又检查了斯图尔特的心和胸，用手电筒认真地查看他的耳朵里面。（给老鼠看耳朵内部而不哈哈大笑，这不是每一位医生都能做到的。）一切看来正常没事，利特尔太太得到了这么棒的一份检查报告，心里十分高兴。
“把他好好养大吧！”医生临走的时候快活地说。
利特尔家是一个令人愉快的地方，在纽约市，靠近一个公园。每天早晨太阳从东边窗子照进来，利特尔一家人照例都起得早。斯图尔特对他的爸爸妈妈，对他的哥哥乔治都是个好帮手，因为他个子一点儿大，因为他能做老鼠所能做的事，再加上他很乐意做这些事。比方说有一天，利特尔先生洗完了澡，利特尔太太要把浴缸刷洗干净，这时候她的戒指从手指上掉了下来。发现它已经落到了排水管里，她真是吓坏了。
“我可怎么办好呢？”她叫起来，勉强忍住眼泪。
“如果我是你，”乔治说，“我就把一根夹发针弯成鱼钩样子，拴上一根线，把戒指从排水管里钓上来。”
