Introduction

《格言联璧》是清人金缨编辑的一部格言集成。金缨，字兰生，清朝道光、咸丰时人，他遍览群书，凡遇名言佳句便记录下来辑为《觉觉录》，后因《觉觉录》篇幅浩繁，刊刻费用巨大，又在此基础上取其精华选编为《格言联璧》。

《格言联璧》共分为学问、存养、持躬、养生、敦品、处事、接物、齐家、从政、惠言、悖凶十一类，内容广博，意蕴深厚，涵盖了社会人生的各个方面，反映了传统社会的道德观念。各个时代的思想精髓都有所包罗，厚重睿智的思想通过简练的话语得到了明晰的呈现。此外，它的篇类编排也体现了一定的内在逻辑和顺序。除了最后两章的“惠言类”和“悖凶类”属于“善言善行”和“恶言恶行”的分章总结外，前九类大体上遵循着宋代以来君子修身“格物”“致知”“诚意”“正心”“修身”“齐家”“治国”“平天下”的思想脉络。

虽然全书分有十一类，但是每类的首要思想都是在告诫人们要立德为先、修身为要，即无论做什么事，先要做一个堂堂正正的人。而这种立德修身又不是靠空谈得来的，需要在现实生活中通过不断约束改进自己来实现。比如“学问类”主要讨论“治学修身”的问题，开篇便提出“天地间第一人品还是读书”，肯定了“第一人品”即立德修身的重要性，更指出“第一人品”的最终养成，归根结底还是要从学习辑有先贤言行和教诲的书籍中得来。

《格言联璧》成书于清朝中晚期，书中的许多格言侧重生活实际，直至今日仍不失实用意义。“养生类”中的格言以中医理论为依据，对当下人们保养身体仍大有帮助。“敦品类”“处事类”“接物类”等章对人们为人处世方面的指导和告诫，对现代人仍有一定的指导意义。不过，因编者无法超越所处时代的局限，书中的“因果报应”等思想带有迷信色彩，我们在吸取书中精华的同时还要摈弃一些不符合客观认知的思想。

金缨辑录《格言联璧》的工作始于道光二十六年（1846），至咸丰元年（1851）刊刻印行，光绪二十三年（1897）重刊。民国时期，扬州张瑞曾对该书详加校订且“兼用褒贬圈法，标示其当法当戒者”，印光大师为其撰重刻序。本书以《格言联璧》的现行通行本为基础作了整理和注释，由于个人学力有限，如有错讹之处，还请广大读者给予指正，在此深表感谢！
