“噢，那个地方，”凤凰说，“好，我尽我的力去做。”它飞到地毯上，在那上面来回走了几分钟，埋着头在动脑筋。接着它神气地昂首挺直身体。
“我可以帮你们，”它说，“我差不多可以肯定我能帮你们。除非我上了大当受了大骗，要不然我一定可以帮你们。你们不在乎我离开你们一两个钟头吧？”它也不等回答，便穿过黑暗的塔楼井，飞到上面光亮的塔口外面去了。
“好，”西里尔有把握地说，“它说了只去一两个钟头。不过我在书上读到过囚犯和人们给困在地窖和地道什么的里面，眼巴巴等着给放出来，我知道每一分钟都是漫长的。那些人总是做点什么事来度过这绝望的时刻。要想驯服蜘蛛没有用，因为我们没有时间了。”
“我希望不是这样，”简怀疑地说。
“我们应该在石头什么的上面刻上我们的名字。”
“说到石头，”罗伯特说，“你们看到墙角那堆石头没有？我断定那儿墙上有个洞……我还相信那是一扇门。对了，瞧这儿……那些石头排成圆形，像墙上一个拱门；洞在这里——里面黑咕隆咚的。”
他说着已经到了那堆石头那里，爬到石头上面——把石头堆最上面的一块移开，发现了一个小黑洞。
接着大家都帮起忙来，把那堆石头扒拉下来，转眼之间，个个脱掉外衣，因为这活儿让人热起来。“这是一道门，”西里尔擦着脸说，“这倒不坏，万一……”
他本来要说“万一凤凰出了什么事情”，可他怕吓着简，没把这话说出来。只要他想得到，他可不是个心地不好的孩子。
墙上那拱形洞越来越大。它里面非常非常黑，比塔底昏暗的光线还要黑。它越来越大，是因为孩子们不断把洞里的石头挖出来，扔到另外一堆石头上去。石头堆在洞里一定已经年深曰久，因为它们上面蒙着青苔，有一些还被青苔粘在一起。因此挖石头这个活儿很辛苦，正如罗伯特说的。
等到那洞挖到拱顶和地面之间有一半的时候，罗伯特和西里尔小心地钻进去，点亮了火柴。这时他们感到，有一位明智的爸爸是多么谢天谢地啊，他不像有些孩子的父亲那样禁止孩子随身带火柴。罗伯特和西里尔的爸爸只坚持一点，就是他们带的要是安全火柴，一定要在火柴盒上擦才亮。
“这不是门，这有点儿像地道，”在第一根火柴亮了一阵熄掉以后，罗伯特对外面两个姑娘叫道，“你们站开点——我们把石头推下来！”
他们起劲地这样做。原来堆在洞口的石头现在差不多已经没有了——女孩们看见面前是一个黑暗的拱洞，不知通到哪里去。怎么回家的怀疑和恐惧在这兴奋时刻全都忘了个精光。这就像大仲马小说里那个基督山伯爵……这就像……
