空中客车飞机概念的起源
说来也奇怪，欧洲的第一种空中客车飞机的概念竟然是源自于美国，而非欧洲。
1966年4月26日，美利坚航空公司技术总监弗兰克·柯尔克（Frank Kolk）致信给当时美国三大飞机制造商——波音公司、麦道公司和洛克希德公司，问他们是否有兴趣研制一种可以使用小机场、能载250名乘客、并能在2400千米航线进行经济运营的宽体双发飞机。柯尔克的这种可以运载那么多的乘客、可以飞行那么长的距离的双发飞机的提案，却让一直保守的美国航空公司和几乎同样保守的美国飞机制造商们都大吃一惊。
柯尔克出生于得克萨斯，他以坦率直言而享有声望。空中客车联合团队（简称空客）的一位高级主管，阿瑟·豪斯（Arthur Howes），在一次参与赴美考察团访美期间结识了弗兰克·柯尔克。
