《大家丛书·刘国光传：经济学大家》：

思乡和乡恋，是人类的一种共同感情，而刘国光对于故乡的思恋之情尤深，因为他与他的故乡南京一起，经历了许多难忘的艰苦岁月。
1923年11月23日，他诞生于南京下关煤炭港附近的宝塔桥畔。
南京是个多灾多难的城市。在刘国光刚刚记事的时候，就接连发生了四次灾难。
第一次是1927年他刚刚4岁的时候，北伐军攻占南京，迅猛的革命洪流使得帝国主义心惊胆战，怒火中烧。3月24日夜晚，英、日、美、法四国停泊在下关江面上的军舰一齐向城里开炮，炸得房倒屋塌，血流成河，满地残砖断瓦和烧焦了的商品杂货，令人目不忍睹。
第二次是1929年的一场大火。一天晚上，怒吼的北风吹得天摇地动，忽有一家棚户失火，狂风立即卷起火舌蔓延到周边百余家棚户，只烧得天红地赤，火海翻腾，浓烟滚滚，遮日蔽空。刘国光家附近的宝塔石桥也被熏烧得斑痕累累、一片狼藉。上千人一夜之间变成了无家可归的流浪汉。
第三次是1929年，争权夺势的各派新军阀之间互相干戈相见。国民党改组派头子汪精卫不满蒋介石大权独揽，便唆使他的爪牙——浦口驻军头领石友三起来挑衅，夜半初睡之时突然用炮轰击南京城。于是又是一片房倒屋塌，又是一片血流成河。由于石友三的大炮都是由他的驻地浦口隔岸打过来的，那时的大炮射程又不很远，因之炮弹的十之八九都落在刘国光家的附近下关一带。
第四次是1931年，发生了百年不遇的特大洪水。
这次洪水灾难大，波及面广，江、浙、皖、赣、鄂五省都受了灾，洪水淹没了汉口、芜湖、南京、镇江、扬州、无锡等长江沿岸许多城市。延续时间也长，大约有一个多星期水才退下去。
深黄色的洪水，夹杂着呼啸的风雨和轰鸣的雷电，以骇人的气势汹涌澎湃地泛溢出来，迅猛地吞没了长江两岸无数村庄和城镇、田野和川原。随着几个高大如山一般的洪峰席卷过来，大街小巷立即灌满了洪水，特别是下关那一带地势低洼的地方，更是转眼一片汪洋。
刘国光的父亲刘致和是个精明干练的人。他虽然只念完小学，但自学成才，在那个科学技术还都较为落后的年代，便能够娴熟掌握五金、电料等各种商品性能知识，而英文更是特别地好，因此由一个小贩变成了一家专营进出口的和记’洋行职员，后来又晋升为月薪近一百块大洋的中级职员。用现在的话来说，他已经称得上是一位白领阶层了。
刘国光原来也曾有过几个兄弟，但都天逝了，因之父母对他格外疼爱。然而越是疼爱，父亲对他的学业抓得越是紧，一刻也不放松。在他没入学之前，父亲就将他领到自己办公室，教他识些简单的字，算些简单的数，也教他认识些英文字母。因此，他的英语较其他孩子都好，没上学之前就能看懂一些英语小画册了。后来，父亲又把他送进私塾，在私塾里学了些《三字经》、《百家姓》等学前启蒙教育的书。
在六岁那一年，父亲将他领进小学校的大门口。
这座学校名叫老江口小学，就位于煤炭港的下边，靠近长江轮渡的渡口。学校规模很小，只有两排房子板板整整地立在坡地上。后排房子较高，是高年级的教室，前排地势较低，是低年级的教室。刘国光从最低一层教室开始，一步一步地升高，最后走进了后一排较高地方的高年级教室里。他从没有迟到早退过，更没有无故地逃学和旷课。他印象最深的是樊子山校长的爱人邓老师，她教的一首歌一直鼓励着他的一生，不论遇到什么艰难险阻，他都记住那首歌里的一句歌词：“走啊走，向前走，不回头！”刘国光的母亲姜淑兰是个非常善良贤惠的妇女，淳朴节俭，乐善好施，姐妹四人中排行老二。外公姜永发家境较为殷实，住在北城鼓楼一带，有田产也有房产。他自己务农种菜，雇工开菜园子，而更大的进项是他在城里开设的大学生公寓。原来他家有一大片房产位于今天的南京大学、东南大学附近，他便利用那片房产开设了个大学生公寓。幸运的刘国光也正是借助外公开设大学生公寓，自小儿便有机会接近许多文人、学者和读大书的人。
