Book Abstract

《老子开讲》：
要在这儿为老子画一幅逼真的肖像，实在是一件十分困难的事情。他的生平我们知道得太少，唯一可靠的一点材料就是《史记》中的老子本传，而这篇传记不仅非常简略，而且少数地方还有点含糊其辞。当然，司马迁基本上还是肯定老子是春秋末年人，年龄略长于孑L子，孔子还曾向他问过学。
下面这幅老子的模糊肖像，基本上是对《史记·老子韩非列传》中老子传的临摹：老子出生在春秋时期楚国苦县厉乡曲仁里，姓李，名耳，字聃。那时楚国的苦县就是今天河南省的鹿邑县。李耳为什么样被称为“老子”呢？史无明文交代。《列仙传》说：他在妈妈怀里整整七十二年才出世，一落下地就是一位白发苍苍的老头了，他母亲便把这个老头儿子叫“老子”。这作为笑话来谈谈当然开心，但要把它当作生平介绍那就真要闹笑话了。唐代陆德明在《经典释文》中说：“古者，称师为子。
”古人把老师称为“子”，“子”大概有点像我们今天所说的“老师”或“先生”。可是问题又来了，老子既然姓李，他为什么没有像“孑L子”、“孟子”、“庄子”、“墨子”那样，被人们称为“李子”呢？从《史记》本传中的记载推测，人们之所以尊称他为“老子”，或者是由于他享年高，或者是由于他德行高，总之，“老子”之“老”与姓老之“老”毫无关系，“老子”也许就是“老先生”的意思。
老子无疑是当时的饱学之士，在周朝出任过国家“守藏室之史”的官职，这个职务相当于今天国家图书馆馆长，一般都由学术界的领袖或名流担任。
孑L子曾与鲁国的南宫敬叔一起到周的都城，向老子请教过有关“礼”的问题。临别时老子告诉孔子说：“富贵人家用钱财送人，有学问的人用言辞送人。我当然算不上富贵人，只是窃取了有学问的虚名，所以我还是用言辞为你送行吧。”他停了一会儿又接着说：“孑L丘呵，你汲汲于想恢复的那个‘周礼’，当年倡导它的人骨头都朽了，周礼也失去了生命力。况且，君子时运来了就驾着车去做官，生不逢时就隐居起来深藏不露。我听说，善于经商的人把钱财藏起来，看上去像是个穷光蛋；有高尚道德的君子，那谦退的模样像是个笨人。抛弃你满身的骄气和过多的欲望，抛弃你做作的神态和过大的志向吧，这些东西对你没有任何好处。——我要送给你的话就只有这些。”回到鲁国后，孔子对他的弟子们说：“我知道鸟会飞，我知道兽会跑，我知道鱼会游。会跑的可以挖陷阱去捕获它，会飞的可以用箭去射杀它，会游的可以用丝线去钓取它。至于龙，我就不知道该怎么办了，它是驾着风飞上天的。我见到的老子大概就是龙吧。”老子虽然很有学问，虽然很关心现实，但他个人及其学说以不求闻达为旨归，他肯定不会像今天有些学者那样，为知名度不高而苦恼，更不会为著作的署名问题，与别人上法院去打官司。
他在周的都城呆的时间一长，对统治者的腐败、愚蠢和荒淫越来越厌恶，加之周王朝日益衰微，大权逐渐落人各诸侯手中，于是他辞掉藏书史官的职务，决心一走了之，据说他骑着一头青牛向西域走去，远离了这个声色犬马尔虞我诈的是非之地。
路过函谷关时，关令尹喜因久闻他的大名，盛情地款待了他。老子将要离开函谷关那天，尹喜对他说：“您就要隐居了，可您把那么多学问烂在肚子里，多可惜呀，为我们写一本书吧，难为您了。”关令大人的饭当然不会让老子白吃，他死死缠着老子不放，于是老子就坐下来写了一本《老子》，“言道德之意五千余言而去”（《史记·老子韩非列传》）。
古人并不是随便把什么书都称为“子书”的，只有那些建立了自己的思想体系，卓然成一家之言的著作，才配称为“子书”。
写了这本书后就没有人知道他的下落。有的说他活了一百六十多岁，有的说他活了两百多岁，至于道教徒称他长生不死，那就说得太云雾里去了。
司马迁在老子传后面附记了这样两段话：“有的人说老莱子也是楚国人，曾写书十五篇，阐述道家的作用，其生活时期大致与孑L子同时。”由于老子与老莱子同为楚人，又同处一个时代，还同属道家这一思想派系，人们很容易误把老子当作老莱子。另一则附记是这样说的：“从孑L子死后一百二十九年，史料记载周太史儋晋见秦献公说：‘秦开始与周是合在一起的，合了五百年周与秦就要分离，离开七十年后就会有霸王出现。’有人说这个太史儋就是老子，也有人说太史儋与老子是两个人。”
