约翰·杜威的哲学与教育思想
杜威在基本哲学路线上继承了经验论传统。他把经验解释为超出物质和精神对立之外的中性的东西，既否定经验是客观对象的主观反映，也反对把经验看作是一种纯粹主观意识。在杜威看来，经验既包括人的情感、意志、思想等一切心理意识的、主观的东西，也包括事物、事件及其特性等一切“客观”的东西。杜威否定思想、概念、理论等等是客观对象的反映，认为它们不具有客观真理的意义，而只能作为有用的假设。它们不过是人们为了达到某种目的而设计的工具，只要它们对实现目的有用或者对有机体适应环境有用，它们便是真理，反之就是谬误。
杜威非常重视教育和哲学的关系，甚至把哲学看作是“教育的普遍理论”、“广义的教育学说”。他认为，教育是人类生活所必需的，而思想和学习是人用来适应生活要求的工具，人为了生活而思考，所以哲学也是一种生活工具。掌握生活工具要通过教育，教育好像是实验室。哲学的种种理论可以在其中经过一番试验，使之成为具体的。杜威一生的哲学活动从没有与其教育活动分开，他的教育活动也从没忘掉工具主义哲学。
从实用主义经验论和机能心理学出发，杜威批判了传统的学校教育，并就教育本质提出了他的基本观点，“教育即生活”和“学校即社会”。

《我们如何思维》探讨了人类思维的本质。作者运用大量日常生活中的案例，详细阐述了我们进行思维时的不同过程。全书共三部分，第一部分“思维训练的问题”，说明什么是思维以及思维训练的重要意义；第二部分“逻辑的探讨”论述了逻辑上概念判断、推理、具象与抽象思维、经验与科学思维等方法；第三部分“思维的训练”讨论了如何从活动、语言、观察、课堂教学等方面发挥儿童的好奇心、想象力，培养他们科学的思维方法。

Author Description

约翰·杜威（John Dewey），20世纪最重要的哲学家、教育学家之一，实用主义哲学的创始人之一。他的思想涵盖逻辑学、认识论、心理学、教育学、社会哲学、美术和宗教。他的学术著作甚丰，仅目录就达125页，主要代表作有《民主与教育》《哲学的改造》《人类本性及行为》《经验与自然》《确定性的追求》《艺术即经验》《逻辑：探求的理论》《公众及其问题》《人的问题》等等。
1919年5月至1921年7月，杜威到中国讲学，在北京、上海、山东、山西、江苏、浙江等13个省市演讲数十次，对中国现代思想、文化，尤其是教育产生了重大的影响。胡适曾说“自从中国与西洋文化接触以来，没有一个外国学者在中国思想界的影响有杜威这样大。”

人每天每时都在思索，这不是什么技术性和深奥的事，但也不是什么无足轻重的小事。这一功能必须是与智力相协调，每一次都不能有思维混乱。这是一种推理的过程，是在判断情况的基础上得出结论，间接地得出信念，正因为如此，这可能做对了，也可能做错，所以需要谨慎小心，需要锻炼。它愈是重要，出了错的危害也就愈大。
比穆勒更早的一位学者约翰·洛克（1632-1704）阐述过思维对于生活的重要性和训练思维的必要性，以便通过思维得到尽量好的效果和防止最坏的结果。他说，“任何人做任何事，都是以这一种或那一种观点为依据，以该观点作为行动的理由；不论他运用何种手段，他都是以自己这一有充分根据或并无充分依据的见解作为引导，按照这一正确或错误见解而投入他的全部行动力量……神殿教堂都有它们的神圣偶像，我们都看到有多少人为之顶礼膜拜。实际上，在人们的头脑中，这些观念和偶像都是始终指导他们行动的无形力量，他们都普遍心甘情愿地服从这一指导。因此，极其重要的是要非常用心培养自己的认识，正确运用自己的认识以探求知识和判断实际效果。”既然一切有意实施的活动以及我们种种力量的运用都有赖于思维，洛克强调非常用心培养自己的认识“极其重要”，就是恰如其分的。
