提醒家长孩子有时并不愿意把在治疗过程中透露的事情告诉他们是有益处的。家长感到焦虑，而且认为他们对自己理所应当知道的信息却一无所知，这也是可以预见和理解的，因为家长想要确保他们能及时获得那些他们认为很重要的所有信息。然而，他们必须明白，儿童通常很难将重要和私密的事情与人分享，只有当儿童准备好了并感到安全时，才能做出分享的行为。
有时候，特别是治疗过程中的重要时段，儿童可能会表现出一些新的行为，而这些行为比刚开始治疗时儿童已有的行为更难以被家长掌控。因此，应提前告知家长在治疗开始后很快就会有一段上升期，但是经常会紧跟着一段复发期，这会是很有帮助的。将这种一般信息传达给家长并不会危及儿童与辅导员关系的排外性。然而，如果没有经过儿童的同意，将治疗过程中的具体细节告诉家长就势必会危及到排外性。
