有关儿童与咨询的误区
美国前总统肯尼迪说过：“真理的最大敌人并非谎言——蓄意、图谋、不诚实的违心之说，而是神话～持续、蔓延、影响深远的无稽之论。”（Dawes，1994）。治疗者常有一些执著的信念，如同印度人对神牛的崇拜，认为某些治疗方法最适合儿童。儿童咨询师认为，家庭治疗无法适当处理儿童的成长问题与家庭的内在冲突。而家庭治疗师则认为，儿童的症状显示出了家庭的内在矛盾，或是因此而出现的问题。另外，治疗师之间还有一个普遍信念，即认为儿童的治疗应该是长期性的。本章首先要排除一些针对儿童与治疗的常见误区，并说明为什么兼具整合性与灵活性的焦点解决咨询，是儿童与家庭临床治疗的有效模式。然后，我会介绍一些针对复原儿童所做的关键性研究成果，它们可以为我的主张提供支持。我会遵照焦点解决咨询的基本模式，以及我所提出的六个方法，让治疗过程富有更多的弹性与选择。最后在结论部分，概要综述本书的其他篇章。
“儿童应该排除在家庭治疗之外？”
家庭治疗师在进行治疗时通常会让父母把儿童留在家中，让保姆照顾，或是让父母把儿童暂置在有人管理的等待室或游戏区。有些家庭治疗师认为在治疗过程中纳入儿童，会对他们造成“心理上的伤害”或是产生“极大的争议”。还有些治疗师认为，儿童无法参与咨询讨论，而且由于“理解能力上的限制”，也无法了解大人在说什么。
