第一天：热浪袭来，心有旁骛
我极其舍不得离开妻子和孩子，我是如此想念他们。尽管我们已经做了充分的准备，但我和科林要去的地方，毕竟还是未知。终于等到了出发之日，我已迫不及待。2010年8月14日清晨，我们跨上摩托车，前几个月堆积起来的压力顿时消失了，仿佛压在肩头的巨石瞬间被移走了一般。
中国东部的交通让人抓狂。可以说，同一时间，会有数百万辆车行驶在路上，这种混乱所导致的沮丧情绪也刺激我们后来做了一些疯狂的骑行举动。我俩刚驶出上海，觉得肺部瞬间充斥着马路上拥挤的卡车所喷出的油烟气，这一辆辆的卡车堵在一起，就像是一列巨大的、脏兮兮的火车，在慢吞吞地移动着。
气温渐渐升高了，空气还是蛮湿润的，这种天气，以80公里以上的时速行驶，还是挺舒服的，空气透过骑行服的通风孔呼呼地钻进来，很是消暑。不过，如果时速在30-40公里，就没有这么爽了。不管你以什么样的速度行驶在什么样的路面上，都得一直穿着防护衣，因为天晓得你会在什么时候摔上一跤。就这样，没过多久，这个封闭塑料袋就变得越来越潮湿、越来越让人难受，同时，热乎乎的车尾气把我搞得快要窒息，而且路两旁的垃圾也迎面而来、漫天狂舞，我觉得自己会这样慢慢地被折磨至死。
虽然周六早上6点，高速公路上的负荷就已经如此之重，不过，我们也只花了1个小时就到了汽车轮渡地点，搭船过长江。这时，我们都累得散了架，能有这么个地方伸伸筋骨、吐吐灌满嘴的浓浓的柴油味儿、休息休息，可真不错。
长江对岸，一个主要的问题在于，中国东部的大部分地区都处在建设之中。新公路在一夜之间突然出现，小镇子也秒变摩登城市。如此大兴土木的一个后果是，路上出现了让人难以置信的塞车场面。
那天上午，我们遇到的另一个问题是，新建公路的网络标识并不给力。我们的摩托车上装有GPS，可在中国，你几乎得天天更新，才能与时俱进，而我们的信息还停留在一年前。现在，几乎所有的道路都变了：有的整个儿消失不见，有些曾经无关痛痒的小道道，已经摇身变成重要的交通干道。
我们本来计划沿着国道204直接驶往上海北部的江苏省——可实际上根本就没找到路。我们被困在了郊区，在同一个地方兜圈子。上午9点，我俩在一个村子里停了下来，喝点水，歇歇脚。我们坐在路边的小墩子上，把头埋在膝盖里，没了头绪。我们向几个人问了路，最后，终于有人指点迷津。我俩再次启程，神采奕奕。
然而，快乐总是短暂的。国道204上的车排成排，我们只能以25公里的时速慢慢爬行。这天早上，我们时而高昂兴奋、时而沮丧低落的情绪，正是整个中土之行的心情写照。
尽管我们事先都知道，这天上午，公路将非常拥挤，可我们并不清楚实际上是什么状况，更为甚者，温度和湿度都在迅速攀升。不管你提前计划得多么周密，只有车到山前，才会发现路在何方。到目前为止，理想和现实还是有差的：臆想中的风吹秀发，畅通无阻的骑行，实际压根儿不是那回事儿。
录影师查得同我的好友特德·赫利乘坐一辆车子。在行程的第一阶段，特德同意为我们做向导，我和科林便紧紧地跟着后援车——没有录影师的辅助，就没有影片。有时，后援车跟在我们后面，有时，它会跑到前面停下来，这样，查得便可拍摄我和科林迎面驶来的镜头。这种镜头是提前计划好的，很有必要，而镜头的拍摄，也进一步放缓了行程的速度。此外，我们每个小时都会停下来喝几升水，以补充因出汗而流失的水分，还要抖抖腿、伸伸背部几乎抽筋的肌肉；每2、3个小时，我们都要为摩托车的小油缸加油。
摩托车的手把上安有GPS系统，虽然它并不能提供最新的、最准确的路线信息，但却是最奢侈、最可靠的温度计。我们一路上骑得汗流浃背，恶心感和眩晕感越发严重，我和科林通过头盔中的对讲系统向对方数着温度。
“39摄氏度了。”几分钟后，“现在41…42了。”
中午时分，我俩累得不行，决定在附近歇歇脚，吃点东西，便来到了一家面馆。
科林把头盔脱下来后，我一下子被他那番恐怖的模样给吓到了。科林一直在加大那生活，尽管他经常大量运动，身体健康，但是，他从不曾在极不舒服的湿度与高温下骑摩托车。面如土色的科林痛苦地说：“我想吐。”显然，他是中暑了。现在，才是我们60天骑行的第一天的中午，我不禁开始怀疑，我俩是否能够进行到底。
幸好，我一开始就很重视脱水的问题，并做好了相关的准备——我们随身备了几百袋补液盐。我俩各自取下两三袋，吃了面，喝了些雪碧和可乐来补充因出汗而流失的糖分，一个小时过后，我们又有了精神。
早上6点时，我俩是如此兴致勃勃地踏上这次壮烈的冒险骑行。而此后的6个小时里，有5个小时花在公路上，1个小时坐渡轮，只驶出了130公里。我俩原计划当天行驶450公里的，可是，到了这天中午，大家都清楚地觉得这是不可能的。
我们之所以行进得这么慢，除了公路上交通量大、运行缓慢的原因之外，还因为我们有几次都迷路了。我们一直在平坦的柏油马路上骑车——也许是整个行程中遇到的最好的路面了——就这样，骑着骑着，你不得不开始思考，这个计划本身是不是一个重大的错误。我们已经开始着手的行程，也许最终不会实现。
此次骑行没有任何人提供资金赞助，这也意味着说，如果行程期限超过了预期，那么，我们就不得不自行负担所有的额外开销——包括给查得，以及在不同的行程阶段所请来的司机、翻译和维修工的报酬，还有我们所有人的饮食和住宿。
除此之外，还会牵扯一堆的技术性和组织性的问题。我现在实在不想去考虑这些。我是一个绝不言败的人，所以，一旦出现任何疑虑，不管程度有多么轻、多么容易被克服，我都会感到不舒服。
我和科林自上学起就参加各种运动赛：我俩都是篮球队队长，我们带领的都是冠军队伍，我上大学后也一直有在打篮球。所以，我俩都有着决不放弃的性子。这天，有几次，我俩互相望着对方，我知道科林和我在想同一个问题：我们这样做，意义何在？
把这次经历拍成电影的主要意义在于，它像是一个科学试验，而我们就是小白鼠。据我们所知，我们的此次骑行安排是史无前例的，尽管听着很酷，但这也意味着说，没有人能够给我们提供任何建议或忠告。出发向前，我们认为，这次骑行的一个魅力之处，就在于我们是第一个行动者。如今，在第一天的中午，我们就精疲力尽，远远落后于既定的行程。此行会不会很美好，有点儿不好说。
真想不到，一碗面条，一些糖份，一点盐，竟然会起到这么大的作用。吃过午饭，当我们跨上车上路后，觉得又high起来了。离上海越来越远，公路上的车流量也越来越少，没过多久，我们就把时速提高到了60-70公里。到了下午4点左右，我们开到了一些超级棒的路面——崭新崭新，但是空空如也的高速公路——我们猛踩油门，飚到了120公里的时速。没有了脏兮兮、气味熏人的卡车，也几乎没什么小汽车，我们驰骋在农田和辽阔的乡野之间，阳光柔和，凉风透过衣服上的通气口呼呼地钻进来。
我们提前已经计划好了每晚将在哪里住宿，出发前，我们也决定每晚6点不管到哪里，就要停下来过夜：我们的摩托车只有一个小小的车头灯，照不了多远，所以，夜间骑行是很危险的。不过，在中国，比起夜间看不见，不被看见才是真正的问题。这里的人通常不用车上的镜子，所以，如果你骑车从后面过来，他们都不会留意；司机很而能兀自开到路的另一旁，甚至在高速公路上也会如此，而且看客们也完全摸不着头脑他到底为什么要这样做。有些车开的，实在让人发憷。
那天下午的情况还是挺不错的，5：30之前，我们离原计划过夜的小镇之差100公里了。如果再加把劲儿，还是有可能到达的。
我们停在路边喝水，打算一口气奔到目的地。天有不测风云，突然，一道白光划过天空，紧接着，一阵响亮的雷劈，似乎把天空劈成几瓣儿。然后，下雨了——起初，是一滴滴稀稀疏疏的硕大雨点。几秒钟后，变成了倾盆大雨。
一开始还挺舒服的。因为吹起的凉风扫走了一整天压抑且令人窒息的空气，我们炽热的体温也随着降了下来。可不好的是，大雨天，在湿漉漉的路面上骑着两轮车是很危险的。于是，我们只得以不超过30公里的时速前行。当我意识到我们根本无法达到预期的小镇时，便怎么也乐观不起来了。
天空乌云压顶，没了阳光，我们来到了第一个过夜之地——江苏省一个名叫阜宁的地方，运气还不错，我们找到了一家体面的宾馆。
我和科林约定，每晚在宾馆办理完住宿之后，第一件事就是录视频日志。不管当天发生了什么事——不管冻得多么冷，淋得多么湿，累得多么狠，我们都要把视频日志的录制做为第一件事。那晚，我们在宾馆的房间里安好录像机后，我先离开屋子，给科林自由发挥的空间；然后科林出去，我再录自己的；录完后，我们洗了个澡，走出宾馆去觅食。
我俩都有些脱水了，但科林比我更为严重。我不敢相信仅仅一天我俩就会如此狼狈，还有59天在等着我们呢，我不想去想。因为我俩都非常健康，所以之前并没有为了此次行程做什么特别的身体训练。可是，骑摩托车对身体的要求很高，会用到做别的事情似乎都用不到的肌肉，所以，在骑了12个小时之后，我的肢体——尤其是背部——仿佛被人拽着连续击打一样，每一块肌肉都紧绷绷地疼痛着。
这天，我们骑行了405公里，离我们原计划的450公里没差多少。之所以能走这么远，是因为午饭后至下雨前的几个小时路况都很好。我俩就这样，气喘吁吁地睡着了。
第一天，最坏的事情就是和妻子告别，别离实在太难太难。最好的事，是同弟弟一起骑行：这是我前所未有，也是令人难以置信的经历。
在德国接受训练之后，我们原以为知道了旅途会有多么地艰难。其实，现在才发现，我们还是一无所知。
第一天（2010年8月14日）
第一天太可笑了。我从没想过在第一天就会对这次旅行产生质疑；可是，天啊，一大早事情就不顺。我们才骑了10分钟，就有一名警察跟我们说，在这个路面，摩托车是禁止通行的。莱恩飞速躲开警察，我便跟着他一起逃。对我来说，真是太疯狂了，我们竟然可以无视警察！
几分钟后，又有一个警察追了上来，鸣着警笛，冲我们打着灯。我打算停下来，可头盔中传来莱恩的声音：继续向前奔。警察追了大概5分钟左右就停了下来，我俩自由了。他们不放弃又能怎样？太疯狂了。
出发的时候，天气已经很热了。驶出上海的情况还不算太糟糕，就是人多车多——我都不敢相信周六的一大早，路上怎么会有这么多的卡车——后来，我们又坐上了渡轮。到了河对岸，这时，麻烦才真正开始。
我们穿过无数的工厂小镇和农场。中国的工厂多得令人惊讶，不过，想想这里有着14亿人口，制作、生产各种各样的东西，销往全球各地，也就不足为奇了。
我们在一处小小的村子里迷了路。这个村子里，有一些很漂亮的房子，还有一些非常值得一去的地方。到了中午，气温达到了42摄氏度，我和莱恩全副武装，疯狂冒汗，这时候，我脑子什么都不想，只想到达目的地。甚至喝了几公升的水也不顶用，后来，我们终于找到了路，又停下来吃了午餐，我的精神非常不好，这种感觉许久都没出现过了。
我非常疲惫，还很想吐，我都想放弃了；觉得无法再撑下去了。我从来没经历过如此高温——但愿以后再也不会——我中暑了。不过，吃过午饭后，我有了点劲儿，能够重新上路了，尽管依然感觉不舒服。大约1小时过后，刚才吃的食物、盐和糖开始奏效，而且我们也驶入了不错的路面，我渐渐地感觉好了起来。我们还是挺幸运的，如果今天下午的状况依然和上午一样，我真的不知道现在该告诉你什么！
我恢复了精神，颇有一种成就感。后来，大雨倾盆，仿佛灾难来临一样，天空阴沉下来，这时，我们在阜宁停了下来。我已经精疲力竭。这一天，是如此的艰辛；比我之前所做的任何工作都要辛苦。
第一天，我的一个主要印象就是，中国人开车太野了。我们曾一度行驶在四车道高速公路上，中间设置有分隔栏。这路听起来挺正常不是？不过，它还设有专供摩托车、小型机动车，还有大量各式各样的农用车行驶的横道。在这种路面上正常行驶的汽车是无需给这些过马路的车辆让道的，倒应该是这些车辆瞅准时机过马路。理论上如此，可实际上，它们一个个都逍遥自在。我猜，这些司机肯定相信你能够在撞到他们之前及时刹住车。这种情况是多么危险啊。还有一些司机觉得你这边的路比他那边的要好，天知道好在哪里，他们便车把一抹，走进“歧途”。
总而言之，这一天真是考验胆量的一天。幸运的是，我过关了。
