穿越湘西“想象”——湘西风土与我们的误解史

这里就是沈从文笔下的湘西水色。上世纪三十年代，他用干干净净的眼睛和不可遏止的倾诉欲望，记下了湘西的山山水水和人间冷热。他的行程多在沅水，而此刻我眼前的酉水，便是沅水的一大支流。
在此行之前，我曾大略询及周围人对湘西的印象，对于没到过的人来说，最重要的三个关键词是：沈从文、赶尸、凤凰。来源不同的三个词的奇特组合，形成了一种语焉不详的暧昧与空白，牢牢占据着许多人的湘西印象。除此之外，遥远的人们对湘西几乎无从想象。一位友人带着采访任务亲自走了一趟湘西，归来感叹，那里“没有”什么了——我便明白这“没有”二字，是找寻不到那想象中的纯净与原始风貌了。这次“意料之外”的互动，是一种“想象地理”的产物：湘西既被寄予期望，又承担了莫名的失望，这种错位本身，就成为了湘西的一个重要话题。
对湘西的“想象地理”由来已久，而它最初也许源自地理学上的真实阻隔。在1910年以前，“湘西”这个名字大约还没有广泛使用，早些时候百姓口中的湘西，是指雪峰山以西的范围。雪峰山脉和北边的武陵山，将湖南分成了湘东、湘西两大自然地理区域，由于雪峰山的阻隔，在明朝以前的很长时间，山以西地区在政治关系上都与北边的湖北地区更加密切，与山以东的湘江盆地反而关系松散。中华民国时设立的“湘西镇守使”，才使“湘西”这个词语正式确立，湘西镇守使的驻地正在沈从文的家乡凤凰县，而沈从文也用他的反复叙述，使“湘西”的概念渐渐丰满。如今人们口中的“湘西”，有两个概念，一是指湘西土家族苗族自治州，这是一个1957年设立的行政区划；另一个指代的是雪峰山以西的湖南西部，包含了张家界、湘西州、怀化、常德等地的“大湘西”，它既是原本湘西的地理概念，又在地理分界的基础上形成了属于自己的文化圈。
