《边走边啃腌萝卜》为妹尾河童上世纪80年代应朝日新闻社《周刊朝日》之约撰写的旅行随笔。河童此行是以日本人饮食生活的原点腌萝卜为线索，从东京都出发，北至北海道，南抵鹿儿岛，西达鸟取，不仅一路品尝了从监狱、寺院直至远洋渔船厨房里的腌萝卜，就连民间腌萝卜迷的自制产品也不放过，最后竟至亲自做起薰萝卜来。在寻访腌萝卜之余，河童还不时偏离主题，忽而关注公害、食品安全和医疗保健，忽而又对食盐和竹纸的制作刨根问底，对东北雪国早已消失了的野猎人也充满好奇……自然，那个记录着一代日本都市年轻人梦想的“樱桃乌托邦”旧址也不会逃不脱他的眼睛。每一次跟随河童旅行都收获不菲，这一次当然也不例外。虽然没有亲口尝到各种独具风味的腌萝卜，但其细致入微的描述已令人垂涎；河童讲述的几个普通村庄的故事，见证了日本人的勤奋和上世纪80年代日本的乡村生活，而河童友人受其嘱托写来的海外腌萝卜报告，也令人依稀感受到日本移民的乡愁。

妹尾河童，日本当代具代表性的舞台设计家，1930年生于神户，1954年因舞台设计而崭露头角，此后活跃予戏剧、歌剧、芭蕾舞、音乐剧、电视等表演艺术领域，曾获“纪伊国屋演剧”、“山多利音乐”、“艺本祭优秀”、“兵库县文化”等众多奖项。

接到《周刊朝日》编辑部N先生的电话，说想要和我碰面。
“您可不可以写些周游日本的东西？构想是河童先生实际走访当地，用图文将所见所闻写成连载。这个旅行随笔的专栏叫做《列岛草枕》。”
突然这么讲，我听了吓一大跳。
“虽然说只是连载，但每周要写一篇吧？”
“嗯，我们是周刊，所以是每周一篇没错。”
“这个不可能啦！加上我的正职又不是采访记者……”
N先生不厌其烦笑嘻嘻的，不断对我说着相同的事，就这样劝说了六个月。
与其说是深思熟虑后答应，不如说是我服输了，情非得已只好说：
“边走边啃腌萝卜，这个题目如何？”
“咦！腌萝卜？您是指酱菜的腌萝卜吗？”
他突然满脸不安，好像在自言自语：“这腌萝卜啊，日本全国的腌萝卜都是同样形式……”
虽说主题任我决定，但N先生脸上之所以出现为难的神情，应该是认为每次插图都出现切成圆片的腌萝卜，太没变化了。
