本书的许多内容在国外的教材中比较常见，但在国内还没有系统地介绍过。作者在美国伊利诺伊大学学习期间选修了多门实验设计和统计课程，理论的学习给作者留下了非常深刻的印象，作者也看到国内心理学界在实验设计和数据处理方面与国际水平之间有差距。作者和张亚旭副教授多年来从事语言认知研究。由于语言认知研究的复杂性，需要控制的变量繁多，因此，作者们一直非常关注实验设计和统计方面的研究进展。此外，在作者们自己的研究中，也尝试使用过各种实验设计和数据分析的技巧。精细的实验设计和统计方法的使用，使作者们在自己的研究中受益匪浅。

舒华，北京师范大学认知神经科学与学习国家重点实验室教授、博士生导师，应用实验心理北京市重点实验室主任，中国心理学会常务理事暨普通心理和实验心理专业委员会副主任，教育部高等学校心理学教学指导委员会副主任委员。1991年在北京师范大学获教育学博士学位。主持多项国家自然科学基金项目、国家社会科学基金项目、教育部科学技术重点项目和国际合作项目的研究。主要研究方向为儿童阅读发展和阅读障碍、语言的认知神经机制。在国内外学术杂志上发表论文一百余篇。荣获国家级教学成果二等奖、教育部首届高等学校教学名师奖、教育部自然科学一等奖等。

（二）实验研究
实验研究（experimental study）对变量之间的因果关系感兴趣。这种方法的特点是，系统操纵或改变一个变量，观察这种操纵或改变对另一个变量所造成的影响，在此基础上揭示变量之间的因果关系。例如，如果希望了解噪声强度对记忆成绩的影响，研究者可以系统操纵或改变噪声强度，并且测量不同噪声强度下人们的记忆成绩。在这项研究中，噪声强度是一个变量，而记忆成绩是另外一个变量。
在心理学研究中，实验研究是应用最广泛、所获成果最切实可靠的一种途径。心理学实验研究的目的在于通过科学地回答所提出的问题，来认识心理活动的本质及规律。为了达到这一目的，尽管不同领域的心理学实验研究所关心的具体问题以及所采用的具体研究方法有所区别，但都具有以下特点。
（1）实验结果可重复。可重复是指，一个实验研究所获得的结果在同等条件下可以被重复。在心理学研究中，可重复通常是指，当使用虽然是新的但性质完全相同的实验对象（通常称被试）或实验材料重新进行实验时，所获得的实验结果或实验发现与先前的相同。
当先前所获得的实验结果不能被重复时，可能的原因有两个。一个是以前的实验结果只是一种偶然现象，而非必然现象，因此只是一种假象。另一个原因是，在重复进行的实验中，研究者并没有采用与先前实验所用方法完全相同的方法，这使得先前进行的实验和后来重复进行的实验在某个或某些方面存在差别，从而导致研究者观察到与先前实验不同的结果。有时，这种差别表面看起来可能是微不足道的，甚至有经验的研究者有时也难免会忽视。
（2）使用操作定义。美国物理学家布里奇曼（Bridgman，1927）主张，一个概念应该由测定它所用的程序来下定义，这种定义称做操作定义（operating definition）。布里奇曼的主张受到心理学家的欢迎。在心理学中，经常有一些模糊不清的变量，如“创造力高低”“抑郁水平”“害羞程度”等。
