Author Description

罗洛·梅（1909-1994），美国存在心理学家和人本主义心理学家。1930年获得奥柏林学院文学学士学位，1938年获得纽约联合神学院神学学士学位，1949年获得哥伦比亚大学临床心理学博士学位。先和在怀特研究院和纽约社会研究新学院长期工作。获得过美国心理学会的临床心理学科学和职业杰出贡献奖及美国心理学基金会的心理学终身成就奖章等奖励。出版了《咨询的艺术：如何给予和获得心理健康》、《焦虑的意义》、《人的自我寻求》、《爱与意志》、《权力与无知：寻求暴力的根源》、《创造的勇气》、《自由与命运》、《存在之发现》和《祈望神话》等20多部著作。

前言
生活在一个焦虑时代的少数幸事之一是，我们不得不去认识自己。当我们的社会处于标准和价值观巨变的时代，不能像马修·阿诺德（Matthew Arnold）所说的那样，给我们展示一幅“我们是什么？我们应该是什么？”的清晰画面时，我们将会被抛回到对自我的追寻之中。来自各方面使人痛苦的不安全感给了我们新的刺激，让我们不断地追问，是否可能存在一些被我们忽略了的重要指导和力量的源泉？
当然，我也认识到，这不能笼统地被称为幸事。相反，人们会问，生活在这样一个分裂世界中的人怎么可能获得内在的整合？或者，他们会质疑，生活在一个对现在和将来所有一切都不确定的时代，人们又怎么可能进行长期的发展以达到自我实现呢？
