当上脑和下脑系统都被高度运用的时候，行动者模式就产生了。人们以这种模式思考时，往往倾向于制订计划和按照这些计划采取行动（运用上脑系统），留意这些做法的后果（运用下脑系统），最后根据反馈的情况调整计划。根据我们的理论，习惯于依赖行动者模式的人通常在那些允许他们计划、行动和看到行动后果的岗位上感觉最舒适。

当下脑系统被高度运用，而上脑系统没有被高度运用的时候，感知者模式就产生了。人们以这种模式思考时，就会运用下脑系统试图深入了解他们所感知东西的意义；他们解释他们的经历，将它们放入情境中，试图弄清其中隐含的意义。然而，根据定义，以感知者模式行事的人通常不会开展一项详细而又复杂的计划。
