计算机发展到今天，已是种类繁多，可以从不同的角度进行分类。
1．按使用范围分类
（1）通用计算机。能适用于一般科学计算、学术研究、工程设计和数据处理等广泛用途的计算机。通常所说的计算机均指通用计算机。
（2）专用计算机。为适应某种特殊应用而设计的计算机，这种计算机的运行程序不变，效率较高，速度较快，精度较好，但不宜作他用。如飞机的自动驾驶仪、坦克的火控系统，都属专用计算机。
2．按性能分类
根据计算机的字长、存储容量、运算速度、外围设备等性能指标，以及允许同时使用一台计算机的用户多少和价格高低等情况，可将计算机分为：巨型计算机、大型计算机、小型计算机、微型计算机四类。
（1）巨型计算机。巨型计算机又称超级计算机，采用大规模并行处理的体系结构，每秒可以达到1亿次以上的运算速度。巨型计算机拥有几百个、几千个甚至上万个CPU。巨型机结构复杂，价格昂贵，一般用于解决诸如气象、太空、能源、医药等尖端科学研究和战略武器研制中的复杂计算。
