计算机技术的发展经历了从大型主机(MainFrame)、个人计算机(PersonalComputer)、客户机/服务器(Client/Server)计算模式，到今天互联网计算模式的演变。我们有幸经历了这一过程，从20世纪80年代MainFrame主机的哑终端使用方式，到今天广泛流行的互联网Web应用模式，正所谓“合久必分，分久必合”。今天，个人电脑、移动设备、智能手机正以前所未有的速度爆炸式增长，这主要得益于互联网，尤其是Web2.0的发展。这些计算能力有限的轻量化设备正逐渐蜕化为终端的角色，计算需求更多地依赖于通过互联网连接的远程服务器资源。
作为计算资源的提供者，需要拥有足够的计算能力。其最大的挑战是如何具备超高的计算性能、海量的数据存储和网络吞吐能力，以及近乎无限的扩展能力。今天，要满足这些需求不会也不可能回到大型主机的计算模式上(通常称为向上扩展，Scale-Up)，而是从服务器集群化的计算模式(通常称为向外扩展，Scale-Out)寻找突破。从2005年开始接触并引入服务器虚拟化技术，到今天平均单台物理服务器可承载超过30个以上虚拟服务器，虚拟化技术对应用的整合能力令人惊叹。我们也较长时间地关注分布式计算模式，并对Hadoop进行过多方面的测试，分布式计算与分布式存储相结合为资源扩展提供了无限的潜力。
今天，使用智能化终端设备，可以从互联网获取多种多样的资源和服务。由于互联网庞大、复杂的结构，人们习惯将互联网上提供的资源以云团标识。而以互联网方式直接获得计算资源和存储资源的服务也就顺理成章地称为云计算。本书将以虚拟化技术和分布式技术为主，介绍云计算“云端”资源的架构及最佳实践，望广大读者能从中受益。
本书以基础架构讲解和案例开发(部分案例源代码可从官方网站下载)为主，全书共分为4篇，共13章。
第1篇由第1章组成，属于概述篇，系统地介绍国内外云计算的背景、进展、原理、架构、产品、服务，以及数据中心向云计算的演变趋势。
第2篇由第2章至第6章组成，属于虚拟化篇，详细介绍虚拟化的历史、背景、原理、产品，并以商用VMware平台为例，介绍其基础架构、重要特性、主要功能、编程接口等；以开源KVM为例，介绍其主要特色、命令接口使用、编程开发等内容。
