滿頭白髮的女性站在講台上如此說道，接著是深深一鞠躬。那頭白髮不惹一絲塵埃，白得令人嘆為觀止。

「二十五歲，是置手紙偵探事務所的所長。」

今日子小姐抬起頭來，繼續介紹自己。

聚集在會場的聽眾，當然都是為了聽她演講才齊聚一堂的，所以包括我在內，大家都知道她的來歷，但程序上還是要自我介紹一下。

與其說是為了將自己介紹給我們這些聽眾，或許她更是為了自己，才會這樣刻意朗誦自己的「設定」。

「我是忘卻偵探，一旦睡著，記憶就會重置。」

沒錯。

今日子小姐只有今天。

夜裡躺在床上，閉上眼睛，一早再度醒來之時，就會把昨天發生過的一切通通都忘記──無論承接下什麼樣的委託、調查過什麼樣的案子、進行了什麼樣的推理、最後以什麼樣的方式解決，全都會忘得一乾二淨。

不惹一絲塵埃──忘得一乾二淨。

所有記錄都不留。

也就是說──

「也就是說，我是一個能比任何人都恪遵『身為偵探應該遵守之保密義務』的偵探──由於這點特性，我似乎受到很多顧客關照。」

雖然我都不記得了。

今日子小姐半開玩笑地補上了這麼一句，但這句話卻也是如假包換的真實。過去我也曾經多次──恐怕比在座的所有聽眾都更為頻繁地──受到置手紙偵探事務所的照顧，只不過，過去的案子自不待言，就連三天兩頭委託她的我，也完全不在她的記憶裡。

見過再多次仍舊是「初次見面」。

要說對此不感到寂寞，當然是不可能的，但同時我卻又覺得，今日子小姐就該是如此──忘卻偵探的「忘卻」不能有任何例外──不管是對我，還是對其他人。

「今天聚集在這個會場的各位聽眾，或許會期待能從我口中聽到關於我本人在過去曾經參與，經手偵辦過的種種不可思議案件之進一步詳情，但由於我忘卻的特性，非常遺憾，可能要讓大家失望了。而且，想必各位可能比我還清楚吧。」

今日子小姐看似無奈地聳聳肩，然而對此場內的反應卻是歡聲雷動──想當然耳，原本就沒有人期待她講述案情，明知講者是「忘卻偵探」還特地前來聽講，表示早就知道她什麼都記不得──什麼都不會說。

就連對她而言，自己過去解決的種種案件是否能稱得上是不可思議，恐怕也很難說。

既然如此，那我們究竟是來聽些什麼的呢？

場內這些男男女女還有我，與其說是來聽，不如說是來看──來看這個與眾不同，名叫「掟上今日子」的偵探。

因此，說得極端些，不管她開口講什麼我們都不會介意、動手做什麼大家都樂見其成──演講嘛，說穿了大多就只是這麼一回事──對於這點，相信今日子小姐大概也心裡有數。

不僅如此，縱使今日子小姐的記憶並不連續，也是位不曾有人見她穿過同樣穿搭的時尚達人，今天的打扮也刻意強調自己的職業是偵探──雖然沒有真的戴上獵鹿帽，但她身上那件圓領短披風的外套，在在都讓人想起全世界最有名的那位偵探。

或許是把「滿足群眾好奇心」也當成工作的一環吧──從那可愛的外表可能很難想像，但今日子小姐的生意頭腦可不是蓋的。

由現正求職中的我看來，可謂是非常值得學習的生意頭腦。

我講真的，真的應該好好學習。

話雖如此，忘卻偵探這次的工作並不是站在講台上靜靜擺姿勢──這可不是攝影會，而是演講會。

今日子小姐接著這麼說。

「因此，我今天想來談談自己的事。當然，這些都會是在我記憶所及的範圍內的事。我問過主辦單位的工作人員，聽說今天是『掟上今日子』這個偵探第一次演講，所以我想應該不會發生『喂喂今日子小姐，拜託點呀，這件事你上次已經講過了！』之類的情況，敬請放心。」

我不禁繃緊神經。

身負偵探的保密義務，同時具備是為忘卻偵探的失憶體質，根本不記得任何案件的今日子小姐到底打算說什麼呢？這麼想來雖然總是焦心，但又感覺說不定可以趁此機會，聽到連我也不曾聽說的珍貴內幕。

像是自我介紹尚有令人意外的後續之類。

演講固然是她的首度嘗試，但就我所知，由今日子小姐自己來談今日子小姐的身邊事，這也是破天荒的頭一次。

究竟吹的是什麼風。

當然，我只是個老主顧，不可能掌握今日子小姐所有的偵探活動。

「讓我為各位釐清一下大前提。在各位之中，或許有人會心存『記憶只能維持一天的偵探，真的能夠確實破案嗎？』這種極為理所當然的疑問，所以我想先來消弭此般疑慮。畢竟因為這種誤解，可是會對於我將來的工作造成困擾的。我被稱為忘卻偵探的同時，也被謬讚為最快的偵探──各位在入口處拿到的名片，上頭應該也寫得很清楚吧──『一天內解決你的煩惱！』雖說我想這標語其實應該多少有些廣告不實，想必其中還是有許多無法解決的案子才是。」

不過嘛，就忘了那些不順利吧──今日子小姐臉上浮出就連從遠處望去也仍能看得一清二楚的調皮笑容──而會場甚至響起了掌聲。

聽眾完全成了她的後援鐵粉。

看這樣子，不管她說些什麼，大家都會聽得很開心。

真不愧是名偵探。即使不是解決篇，在眾人面前雄辯滔滔，對她而言也宛如探囊取物──神經大條到只能夠好意解釋為「穩健」的台風，實在很難想像是初次登台。

幾近厚臉皮的神經大條，也可說是忘卻偵探的招牌特質。

「身為最快偵探的忘卻偵探──當然，這兩者既是必要條件，也或說是缺一不可──若不是最快的偵探，就無法是為忘卻偵探，而正因為是最快的偵探，我才得以成為忘卻偵探。」

說到這裡，她環視會場。

能容納近千人的大型會議廳裡幾乎座無虛席──真是了不起的群眾號召力。能聚集這麼多聽眾，當然也是因為事前宣傳做得夠好，但歸根究柢，想一探內行人才得見的忘卻偵探真面目，想看她一眼的好事之徒，人數似乎比我想像的還要多得多。

雖然輪不到開場前三個小時便早早就定位的我說嘴就是了。

「無法維持以最快的速度破案之時，就是我卸下偵探這身分隱退之刻──到時候我就每個禮拜演講個三次，靠此維生吧！」

今日子小姐說道。

接著，她將視線轉回正前方。

一時之間還以為今日子小姐是在看我──當然只是我想太多了。今天的我，只不過是眾多聽眾裡面的其中一個。

附帶一提，世界上的確有靠演講混飯吃的偵探，因此今日子小姐的隨口說說，也並非完全不切實際──何況光看她開講到現在的辯才無礙，相信在這方面的確是很有潛力。

「可是聽到這裡，各位心裡想必又會產生另一個疑問吧。『我已明白你的腦筋動得很快，但既然要以偵探為業，這也只是當然。問題是，要是你的記憶每天都會重置，不就表示永遠都跟不上這個瞬息萬變的時代嗎？這樣的偵探，要怎麼應付現代這些早已高度複雜化的犯罪呢？』──這的確可說是再自然不過的疑慮了。實際上，我每天早上醒來時也都會這麼想。現在的我，不正像是從過去穿越時空而來的浦島太郎一般嗎？」

其實我也不知道，台下究竟有多少聽眾會針對「忘卻偵探」的特性深入思考到這般地步。反過來，看在像我這種多次蒙受她關照的人眼裡，這種疑慮只是純粹搞錯重點的杞人憂天。可是，今日子小姐本身又是如何看待這問題呢──我倒是很感興趣。
