阿爾塔米拉洞的壁畫

1868年，西班牙獵人裴瑞茲（Modesto Peres）帶著他的獵犬，來到坎塔布理亞（Cantabria）山丘附近打獵。到達阿爾塔米拉（Altamira）區域時，他的獵犬突然驚叫一聲，接著便憑空消失。百般搜尋之後才發現，原來獵犬掉入了草地裡某個隱密的裂縫，而裂縫的另一頭，則是從來沒有人發現過的一個洞窟。救出獵犬後，裴瑞茲把這個發現回報給該土地的主人：西班牙法學家桑圖奧拉（Marcelino Sanz de Santuola）。由於桑圖奧拉早就知道那塊丘陵地中佈滿洞穴，因此他並沒有把它放在心上。

同一時間，科學界則發生了一件大事。1859年，達爾文（Charles Darwin）出版《物種源始》，在英國哲學家斯賓塞（Herber Spencer）的推波助瀾下，演化論迅速風靡整個西方科學界。到了1870年代，這個新潮的概念已廣泛的傳入知識圈與一般大眾。不少喜愛附庸風雅的西方上流社會人士，也跟著興起了一股尋找奇特生物和古代化石來支持演化論的風潮。

這股風潮，當然也感染了桑圖奧拉。1875年，桑圖奧拉得知歐洲許多洞穴陸續出土了不少史前文物，對考古向來頗有興趣的他，便開始在自家土地上到處東挖西掘，結果在阿爾塔米亞洞穴附近挖出了不少馬格德林文化時期（Magdalenian，歐洲的舊石器时代晚期）的文物遺跡。
