临走的前夕，伊莱娜将她的瑞典男友古斯塔夫介绍给了母亲。

他们三人一起上餐馆吃饭。母亲连一个法语词也不会讲，于是大胆讲起了英语。古斯塔夫很高兴：跟情妇伊莱娜在一起，他只说法语，对这门语言，他已经感到厌倦，在他看来，法语既做作又不太实用。这个晚上，伊莱娜话不多：她感到惊奇，观察着母亲，母亲竟出人意料，能对别人感兴趣；虽然只会三十来个英语单词，而且发音还很糟糕，母亲竞能向古斯塔夫提出一个个问题，问他的生活，他的生意，他的看法，于是给他留下了深刻的印象。

第二天，母亲走了。从机场回来，进了位于顶楼的公寓，伊莱娜走到窗前，在重新获得的一片宁静中，享受独处的自由。她久久地望着眼前的屋顶和奇形怪状的烟囱。巴黎的这道风景早已在她心中取代了捷克花园的那片翠绿。此时此刻，伊莱娜才意识到生活在这座城市是多么幸福。过去，她一直都想当然地认为自己的流亡是一种不幸。但此刻，她在问自己，这是否只是不幸的一种幻觉？一种以所有人看待流亡者的方式造成的幻觉呢？她难道不是用一套别人塞到她手中的标准在看待自己的生活吗？伊莱娜对自己说，流亡国外，虽是迫于外界压力，出于无奈，但她有所不知，这也许是她人生最好的出路。大写的历史的无情力量虽说一度剥夺了她的自由，但还是把自由还给了她。
