In Japan, the Moon Festival is commonly known as Tsukimi (月見, meaning moon-viewing). Interestingly enough, the Japanese word for moon “月/tsuki” sounds exactly like “好き/suki” meaning like/love, giving the moon a unique romantic symbolization. In the 19th century, renowned Japanese novelist Natsume Sōseki translated “I love you” into “今夜は月が绮丽ですね”, meaning “The moon is beautiful”. The poetic translation highlighted just how beautiful it is when one’s most sincere and nuanced feelings are expressed in a delicate and subtle way.
